Potential new owner... few questions.

Hi there everyone. been reading on here and its a great source of knowledge.
Having a look at my second tuscan tomorrow (first one was no good) and this one is at a sports/prestige car garage.Waiting till tomorrow to look through all the history to see what the has had done but the good thing from the outset is that i have been offered a warranty for the car. Apparently the warranty is for expensive sports/performance cars and only list what it doesnt cover, not does. Engine gearbox, switchs electrics etc are all covered apparently. My question is has anyone heard of such warranty, or got one? what was it like if you had to make a claim? im thinking if i get one with a good warranty it should give good piece of mind. Im trying to buy one that is used ad a daily driver as it seems from reading on here that they are more reliable.
car is a x 2000 with 40k on it.

There are so many expensive things that can (and often do) go wrong with a Tuscan that fall under most warranties' "wear and tear" clauses that I wouldn't bother with one. For example, £6k engine rebuild - wear and tear (regardless of the fact it's due to crap design). £1k Clutch every 20k miles - wear and tear. £1k for decent shock absorbers when the shoddy factory ones wear out after 30k - wear and tear (if they haven't been done already). I could go on, but you get the picture.

I've taken the approach of self-insuring my car's reliability, after buying a very carefully inspected car in the first place. For the £1500 per year that a third party warranty would cost, I have saved up a healthy repair fund in the event that anything major goes wrong. If you're lucky enough for nothing major to happen while you own the car, then you are quids in.

The Warranty underwriters are very clever.

If your engine blows up they will find a worn component that caused the engine to go, and then blame wear and tear, and hence not pay you. It is all clever talk and no substance.

If you do buy a TVR from a dealer, make sure it is a reputable one such as Fernhurst.

ps - i have never bought from Fernies, but not heard a negative comment on this forum about them in nearly 4 years. Always positive.

Ian i think you would get a LOT more for your money if you are thinking about an 7-8 year old car if you go private, you can talk to the owner and get a better deal, even if you get it to a tvr garage they will only charge about £150 for an inspection

My recommendation...

Sit and read through this forum - will give you a gist of all the things that go wrong and what to look for.

Get an inspection - best £150 you will spend, could save you £1000's.
