At he beginning of the year a bought a crashed Tuscan 4.0. It’s my first TVR and it took me quite a while to repair everything because the shortage of time. It was a very interesting experience and I learned a lot of new things. Finally I got her assembled and started her for the first time - what a thrill. I just did the first few miles with her and its just what I always wanted. Engine is very smooth when idling and everything works fine for now.

But I have a few questions because I'm far form UK an there are no TVR specialists in our country, so I'm turning to you dear PHs for help.

1. On the dip beam light there are small electric motors. How are they controlled?
2. I just got a set of Nitrons and I will fit them by my self. I would like to know what is your ground clearance with the full fuel tank and no passengers? I want to set it low but still high enough so that when the car is loaded it wont be to low. The standard shocks and springs are quite soft and there is quite a difference in ground clearance between empty and full car. I hope that will not be the case with Nitrons.

Thanx for help.

I reckon if you get a crashed Tuscan back to its former glory in less than six months in your own time, you're not doing too badly! thumbup

Congratulation on the build, no mean feat!!

When setting up mine I set the spring platform heights so the gap between the tire and the wheel arch was constant around their circumference. An aesthetic thing really but worked from a load carriage/speed bump point of view as well, particularly with the stiffer aftermarket springs.

Congratulations on getting your car back on the road!

The Hella dipped beam units seem to have motors for remote levelling, but TVR didn't connect them to anything. I imagine that you could rig them up to something in the cabin with a bit of electrical ingenuity, but it doesn't seem worth the trouble.

On the subject of ground clearance, every Tuscan I see seems to be different. When I had Gaz Golds fitted I was about to leave on a 2 week trip with a full load of luggage, so they were set deliberately high at the back with the car empty. An often quoted optimum handling set up is to get the lower wishbones (and steering arms) as parallel to the ground as possible - however that's just one factor. More important to me would be to get the chassis outriggers level, or very slightly higher at the back; a slight nose down attitude will help combat the Tuscan's aerodynamic front end lift at high speeds. Getting the height approximately right yourself, then getting a full 4-wheel alignment check done, would seem the best course of action.

Good luck!

10mm higher at the back was the figure I was quoted when I had Nitrons fitted to my Mk1 Tuscan. Do not measure from the wheel arches as the body can be out, use the outriggers.

I've learned about the measuring of the body shell when I did the repairs. Nothing on the car is symmetrical. It just looks that left and right side of the car are the same but they are not. So I was banghead for quite some time how to get it right. But then I said to myself: stop measuring for gods sake and just align everything so that it will at least look symmetrical. smile

So it really is a hand made car.

Hi guys!

A short update. After the first few miles I found out that the radiator is leaking. It's understandable - the car has been involved in an accident. I had to wait a week to get a new one form Radtec. It fitted it today and got the testing license plates. Did my first 50 miles in the car today. It was a very hot day - over 30 degrees. The water and oil temperatures were normal (88-96 degrees for water and about 5 less for oil).) The gear knob got hot very hot in the city traffic though. It got me worried at the beginning but after reading some old post i feel more comfortable.

Tomorrow I have homologating so please keep the fingers crossed that I will be able to make the car road legal in our country. I will try to post some photos later when the car is registered.

Still not there. They are making my hair grey. But i will prevail thats for sure.

One more question. When driving i've noticed that under acceleration there is a black smoke coming out of the tail pipes. I also noticed carbon residues on the pipes and the back of the car. Does anyone have a clue why.

With regards,

Kristian Les

hmmm many things could to that.

if on the two pipes could be a problem of lambda or catalyst wich is not properly fonctionnal and gives bad information to the ECU then too much benzine sent by the injectors.

first thing in my opinion you should is to control compressions ratio on the 6 cylinders and the state of your spark plugs.

Today is a special day. Not just because of the great news from TVR, but also because I finally manage to get my Tuscan street legal in our country (BTW it's the first Tuscan and a second TVR in our country). It was a long fight over 3 weeks to get to the finish, but the victory is sweet. Thanx to Ben from TVR for help - I couldn't manage it without your support. You took your time to help me even though you had a lot of more important things to do.

Now lets burn some rubber driving

Congratulations.

Mine seems to leave a lot of black sooty residue at the end of the tailpipes but when we checked the Cats they were perfect. I suspect it is just the effect of the overrun burning in the cans rather than the engine. There might be a more mechanical/ technical explanation.

I had the same problem. One of the pipes was black and you could find carbon residue on the back of the car. I connected the ECU to the laptop and is showed lambda sensor was dead. What happens when lambda is dead is: Dead lambda gives to the ECU value 0 which means that the mixture is lean. Because this is very bad for the engine the ECU tries to inject more fuel. Because there is not enough oxygen now it doesn't burn completely - there is some unburned carbon in the pipes.

Hey Kristian

Firstly well done on getting this back together so quickly. I'm half Slovene from Ljubljana and visit at least once a year in my Griff 500 and as you say, I've never seen a TVR in the country. Where abouts are you?

Some of my most memorable drives have been on the mountain roads up to Jezersko and over the Lublej Pass.

Hi!

These are really nice roads. I know them well from my motorbike days. I'm from Celje, thats about 45 miles east from Ljubljana. If you will come to Slovenia let me know and we can go for a drive.

Otherwise there is only one more TVR in our country and its a Griffith the owner is somewhere form Novo Mesto. I'm trying to find him.

So here is a nice picture of my Tuscan and my lovely 2 year old doughter helping me wash the car.

Aahh you're from Lasko country then!

Afraid that I'm a Union man myself but good to hear that there's a few of these cars about there. I'll be over in October probably but combining it with a business trip means I probably won't be in the Griff frown

Zdravo!

haha! laugh So you know about the beer war in Slovenia. beer No I'm not a Lasko fan, because I don't support dirty companies like that. BTW Lasko actually bought Union so even if you order Union you get a beer that was made by Laskowink

When you will come to Slovenia let me know. Will go out and have a great Bernard beer from Chech Republic.
