Hi Folks,
For those of you that have replaced the clutch on your Tuscan, I'm interested to know how long it lasted and also what the symptoms were like when it started to go...

I've only done 6k miles in my car but am concerned that it is already on the way out..

When I bought it at 4500 miles, the pedal was *really* stiff, but engaged very positively, etc. Since then I have only done another 1.2k miles, but have spent a lot of time around town, in traffic.

The clutch pedal has got noticably less resistant and seems to get 'softer' when I've been stuck in traffic for prolonged periods of time. It also jumped out of 1st gear the other day when accelerating.

When it was in the garage recently getting the head gasket sorted, I did ask them to check on the clutch and the dealer reckoned it was fine(took it for an hour test drive, etc), no worn fingers that he could see, etc.

I'm due to take the car away for a couple of longish trips (one to Paris, etc) - is it time to order a clever trevor clutch and just get the standard item replaced/bite the bullet ?!

I'd be really interested to hear anyone else's experiences !

Many thanks,

Mustang Baz

Jonathan - I am on my 3rd clutch now @ 31.5k miles, having just had a new lightweight flywheel put in some 1.5k ago by Racing Green. My first clutch lasted 10k miles, which was a surprise given the chap I purchased it from maintained it was only driven on longer drives/not in towns. The second - wholly under my ownership - lasted 20k - primarily longer drives, good roads, careful use of the clutch (i.e. no clutch drag, limiting gear changes @ junctions using the "roadcraft"/Ride Drive style of driving etc) but still with some heavy traffic use.

When my last clutch was on its way out, I noticed it felt "looser" in 1st and 5th, a b**tard to get into reverse, but that the clutch pedal was getting easier to depress, not that it was unduly heavy in the first place. At point of (immediate) check out by my dealer, it was found seals were going and several clutch fingers were either broken/damaged. Claimed under warranty successfully.

One thing - not sure how the clutch fingers were viewed by your dealer, as I thought the engine had to come out for this to take place meaningfully (may be wrong here?).

Mine is due it's 3rd clutch now at 30,000 miles. First was replaced at 12,000 following lots of track days and it's due a change now at 30,000.
I find it gets harder to engage gears once it's due for a change.

this is a bit depressing - are we saying that you can't normally expect any more than around 10K miles from a Tuscan clutch then, or are these guys just unlucky...?

Don't take my post above the wrong way, I've done loads of track days so I wouldn't take my figures as representing "normal" road use.

Hi guys - thanks for your replies - yes, I had a blown head gasket at 5k miles (don't ask !) - which is when Austec took a look at the clutch and said it looked okay....(the engine was out)

Yes the clutch is getting easier to use and gets very 'soft' after prolonged periods in traffic... I'm about to take it on a decent (250 mile) run this evening, so will report on how it goes !!

I'd certainly be interested in hearing from anyone who bought a clever trevor clutch to see if that lasted longer than the standard item....

I've spent £4k (ok, including insurance) on the Car so far since May - eeek !! smile

Jonathan.

There was a thread on here a while ago about the Clever Trevor / Raceproved clutches and general feedback seemed good.

My 2001 4.0 has just had a new clutch at 27k miles - I believe this is the first! I went for the standard AP Clutch but in hindsight feel I should have spec'd the Raceproved kit.

There was no noticeable change in pedal feel up to the point of failure with my clutch and the new one feels no different than the old one. Recommend buying a clutch kit now a keep it in your boot!

can someone please explain why tuscan clutches seem to go faster than other TVR's/performance cars? I am curently looking for a tuscan and am a bit put off when people say the car has had a clutch replacement yet the car has only done 20k miles. To me it makes it sound like it has been driven hard or abused.

Far from it. Mine was carefully driven for those 20k miles, and having done both IAM and Ride Drive courses, I am reasonably comfortable in saying that. Speak to most knowledgable dealers however and they will feed back that 20k is the accepted life of most Tuscan clutches. Not sure whether this is due to parts/mechanics.

I'd second what Baz said - 20k is the accepted life for the OE clutches, with lots failing due to poorly made fingers, rather than wear on the friction plate. Probably too early to say if the Raceproved version will last longer, although anecdotal evidence sounds good.

I just replaced my clutch after 35k although the car had an engine rebuild before I bought it at 12k.

My clutch didn't actually go but I started to get jittery because it was getting harder to get into gear when it was cold and didn't seem to like moving slowly in traffic in, say, first gear. I was going to Le Mans and didn't want to break down there !

It went in for a service at Power and they did the work then. iirc about £300 plus labour for a modified Raceproved heavy duty thing. Power do their own modifications with already proven hardwear. I am not expecting to have to change it again for some time.

I know someone who did 42K on his original clutch. A few slave seals replaced of course.

Despite my scaremongering, I'm also on my original clutch (and engine!) at 35k, although the first owner did 19k of mostly motorway miles.

I figure that if it doesn't go in the meantime, I'll get it replaced if or when the engine goes t*ts up. That and the TVR Power 4.3 upgrade...wink
