Oversize rear screen

Guys,

Where's a good place to get an oversize rear screen for a Mk1?

I sometimes see screens advertised but I'm never confident if they're the oversize variety or not, they normally don't mention it.

I mailed TVR Spare Parts (Clever Trevor) and both Keith and Graham were unaware of there being different sizes. They say their screen comes from the original maker and to the best of their knowledge has always been the same size aside from a few very early ones which rejected and never fitted to cars.

Anyone got any further info on who definitely sells the oversize ones? Obviously I don't just want an identical "regular" sized screen!

I've phoned Power too and they also assure me there's only 1 sized screen.

Can anyone who has one of the better fitting screens please enlighten me as to where you got it from, and what the differences are?

I've heard rumours of the screen extending down around the clips at the bottom and that it easily extends over the rubber all the way around. This is exactly what I'm after!

My screen has 2 extentions at the bottom for the clips and seems to extend the rubber. If I have time tonight I will try and get some photos of it

hi guys,

i bought an oversized screen from a pistonhead member Richard aka RJC or RCJ about four years ago i dont think he is a memeber anymore as could not find him on here!!

basically his mate owned the/or a company selling the originals but was able to sell larger ones because of complaints with originals! at the time he only had slightly tinted blue or green ones! i went for a blue one and looks fab with the car!(it is only a very very light tint in the plastic)! i think the cost was about £100

im sorry if this not much help, but they are out there and they do fit alot better than the original, will post pictuers next week sometime!

The story of the original screens was that TVR gave the incorrect dimensions to Richards friend who made the screens, a thousand or so were made before the mistake was realised hence the first thousand or so cars had slightly smaller screens about 6mm all round than later screens. I would think that all screens now available now would be the slightly bigger ones.One way to know is that the later ones had the cut outs for the clips at the bottom of the screen. HTH

Thats really useful and somewhat consistent to the stories some of the suppliers are saying, although in their words "none of the originals should have been fitted"...

I'm still yet to see a screen with the cut outs at the bottom though - if anyone has one would they mind posting or emailing me a pic?

Thanks very much for the pics (had to wait til I got home from work to see em). That clears it up - I definitely have an old style and have never come across the new one til now.

I guess the 2 "edges" on the bottom line up on the inner edges of the 2 clips so the screen is always exactly centred, or is there still some give in it horizontally? (Or option D - I'm totally wrong)

Also, does the larger screen still fit into the roof bag ok? Come to think of it - I don't have a roof bag with the new car... anyone know where I can get one of those too?!

On the subject of screens, I've just spent the last hour trying to squeak-proof my rear screen! It's been doing my head in for the last week - the silicone spray wasn't making a difference and I think was getting washed away in the rain.

Bought some double-edged weather proofing strip and put it along the bottom edge of the screen where the rubber meets the perspex and also along the inside of the boot lid where it closes against the screen and clips. I also put some masking tape across the top lip of the screen to see if that makes a difference. There's already velcro strips all over the place, so fingers crossed this has sorted that damn squeaking out!

That's right Mark... there's probably about half a cm either side of the clips. It's still a hassle getting it to fit where you want it though!

It does also fit into the bag.

Does anyone know if there's anything you can clean the perspex with to get it nice and shiny and take the swirl marks out?

When I fitted the larger screen to my MK1 Tuscan the clips did not line up with the cut outs, as they were further towards the sides of the car so they were of little benefit for aligning the screen up.On my MK2 Tuscan the rear screen is a very tight fit & the screen does have to be lined up quiet closely to the clips

The larger screen fits in the screen bag OK they must have given the correct dimensions to the manufacture for these I don't know where you could get one though.

The screen clips can also be the cause of squeaking, both against the screen and the boot lid. Can recommend ant-squeak tape from D.Tweeks available in 1 metre lengths, this is fitted to the screen side of the clip & on the inside edge of the boot lid, would also be better than masking tape at the top of the screen.

On the subject of squeek proofing, there is a periodic lapse back into threasds on this but I can tell you that the only thing that has ever worked for me was rubbing vasoline into the rubber seal.

It stopped it instantly and it need redoing every 6 months of so and take 5 minutes to apply. Cheap and simple - I love it..

I just fitted a smoked rear-screen to my Tuscan. There is a remarkable difference in cabin temperature!
