Was out for a run today, and joining a bypass going through the gears there was a horrible 'graunching' engaging 5th gear!
Immediately slowed down and dropped through the box - all other gears fine, but same again when trying 5th - bugger!!
I nursed it home and it behaved impeccably in the rest of the gears, and the clutch seems perfect - when I got it in the drive, it engages 5th ok sitting still.
I take it it might be something to do with the synchro, but dont know for sure - can anyone recognise thyis from my description, and suggest solutions?

cheers for any pointers...

oh, and its a Mk1 4.0

Yeah I think so. Hasn't happened on mine (yet) boxedin but from what I understand you will have to get the gearbox out and have the circlip replaced. If it is bad you might want to just get the gears replaced.

Think TVRpower have started doing this.

Is there a detailed gearbox removal description anywhere - or can someone post it up please?

Same thing happened to me , It was the circlip and required the removal of the gearbox. If I remember the cost for repair was around £650.grumpy

Right

I have emailed you about some stuff.

Also check out this website. It is more to do with the sag but may help.

Sorry have just read the T5 gearbox manual I was gonna email you. Unfortunately it is all to do with the internals rather than removal

C'mon guys, help me out here(cheers for your input, Greig).
Typically, my mechanic brother is off on holiday so I'm going it alone at the moment to remove the box myself...
Car well up and on stands, plates off, exhaust removed (could it BE more fiddly!)
Obvious things to do are detach the propshaft, remove the rear box bracket and split the box from the engine - is it best/easiest to split at the gearbox/bellhouse join, or bellhouse/engine joint?
Also, are there bolts out of sight at the top, and what happens with the gear lever?
Anything else i'm not considering?

Would really appreciate any tips here....
