can't manage to connect to the ECU, and I don't know why....

I bought an OBD2 cable off e-bay, to test my OBD connector....s/w shows ECU not connected, even after repeated attempts with connect ECU command...Switch to the 3 pin plug (by the fusebox) and ECU connects OK. I'm using an old Laptop with a 9 pin serial port...so I suspect as I stated earlier, at least my OBD connector in the car is dead.
This was the pin out of the cable I bought.
OBDII 16 PIN(Male) DB9PIN (Female)
(J2850 BUS+) 2----------------------------7
(Chassis Ground) 4--------------------------1+2
(Signal Ground) 5---------------------------1+2
(CAN High J-2284) 6-----------------------3
(ISO 9141-2 K Line) 7---------------------4
(J2850 BUS- ) 10--------------------------6
(CAN Low J-2284) 14---------------------5
(ISO 9141-2 L Line) 15--------------------8
(Battery Power) 16-------------------------9
This pin out is different from the one you used...I'll check with VARLEYHDs guide. http://www.varleyhyd.com/FJ062.asp#ecuconnection
I'm using the multiple yellow Cerbie s/w rather than the single Blue Cerbie s/w. The Blue version will not work with my level of MBE ECU.
Looks like the cable is different ...so I'll mod it this afternoon and try again.

Tried with
OBD Pin 2 to Serial Pin 3
OBD Pin 3 to Serial Pin 2
OBD Pin 5 to Serial Pin 5
which I think is what VARLEYHD says and still no joy......use the 3 pin connector easier..
Has anyone successfully used the 16 pin OBD connector??????
