Got my Tuscan back from Gorners today following the myserious electrical problem which looked like a short circuit/battery drain of failing starter motor.

The symptoms were that despite a new and freshly charged battery - the car would refuse to crank over properly and appear to take all the current available. Low volts warning would appear of the dash.

The reason for this mysterious and sudden occurence has been traced to a poor earth lead contact between the bell housing and chassis tube (to rear of O/S front wheel arch). The powder coating on the chassis underneath the nut and bolt for the earth was still intact and not helping matters. Steve at Gorners therefore removed the lead, cleaned the contacts and removed the powder coat to make a better contact. A generous helping of copper grease to keep it dry and corrosion free - and now she starts perfectly.

I am kicking myself as I took a good look at the earth lead and all seemed to be OK. Likewise the RAC eliminated this from their enqueries rather too soon - and after spending 2.5 hrs trying to get it going.

So - if your Tuscan should start to fail when starting, and your battery is freshly charged and jump starting does not work: get the front O/S wheel off and check the earth strap before proceeding any further.

All credit to Gorners for tracing the problem and rectifying it. I am also pleased to report that they kept the car for a few days locked with the alarm to check that this was not affecting the electrics/battery.

So, result. One happy owner with car fixed - and only a very small and reasonable bill for the effort involved by Gorners which included a 100 mile round trip to collect and trailer the car from Halifax to Wigan.

Great news! It's nice when you're reunited with a loved one after an enforced separation, isn't it? Will know what to look for if T1VER develops the same symptoms. Enjoy!

Hi Jane.
Would you be referring to Clive or T1VER in your comment???????

I'm pleased the car is back to enjoy what is left of the year before the snow and salt arrive! See you soon, (Grassington run?)

Bryan,

Glad you got it sorted in the end. Hopefully we will get to meet you and your Tuscan at one of our 'run outs'?

Thanks Simon,
And here was me telling you a month ago I had battery problems - doh !

No doubt we will catch up on a run sometime soon but I am pleased that Jayne provided one of the Tuscans to join on your N. Wales run. I would really like to do the Puch Bowl in my Tuscan having completed it once already in a Chimaera. You have some cracking roads in your locality.

Are you going to Gorners open night?
