Best tyres for a Tuscan
Discussion
I currently have Toyo Proxies tr1-s 235/40's front and 245/40's rear that will need to be changed in a couple of months.
What tyre combination is recommended? I have read a lot about goodyear/toyo/falcons with different sizes and aspect ratios but nothing about pirelli/michelins etc.
I would like a good tyre that gives grip in both dry and wet conditions - dont care about snow cos i will never drive a Tiv in it, and I am not fussed about wear 6-12k is ok for me. I might attend the odd track day, (once or twice a year), but more interested in a fast road tyre that delivers grip.
Tyre change will coincide with Geometry check and possible change of shocks.
I Know that driving style is the key, but I have been sideways twice this week without warning.
once on a r/bout at 20mph!!!! and once on a straight under acceleration. I expected the 2nd but the first was scary because it was totally unexpected! - my old volvo coped better! and now im driving like an old codger cos I cant trust the car/tyres.
If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

At temperatures above 10°C and dry street conditions, I was always happy with the (good old) Eagle F1s, though I`d prefer a more stable straight performance at very high speeds beyond 170mph on the (German) Autobahn.(GAZ suspensions and a medium to track race geometry set-up)
Another German Tuscan mate had recently changed to the latest Good Year Eagle F1 Asymetrics and reports very good allround results.
There are many (more or less independent...) comparison tests on the www, where the Michelins and Pirellis are usually amongst the top 5. But these tests are all conductd on much heavier and less powerful cars with ESP and ABS....

I will need 4 tyres for mine too. Shame the misses wont chip in and buy me some for Christmas but apparantly money towards tyres is not a proper present
Anyhow, I have been looking around for Eagle F1s and it doesn't seem I can get them anymore.
I was wondering why everyone states these are the best to get? Is it because everyone else says so, or are they proven to be the best on a Tuscan?
Also what are the alternatives to get? Anyone on here swear their tyres are the best from 3000 miles of testing in all conditions and road types?
I currently have the gaz gold setup, so wish to get tyres to compliment this.
All ideas and suggestions appreciated.

Why these ones Avalanche?must be honest, winter sport would not be my normal first choice, i drive in a bit of rain sometimes but not that often!

I think I'm going to try the Falkens when mine need changing. See here for an earlier post: http://pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f...
Cheers S6
They seem a reasonable tyre for the price from that thread.
Also the tread pattern drew me to them. The directional ones that draw water from the middle seem to be more preferable from other makes ive tried on other vehicles, plus they do have the bonus of a rim protector which even the most careful of us could do with sometimes

You would see an enormous difference in drive-ability in the same conditions between the two. It's just we're not used to changing tyres in the winter in England.
The problem comes with the cost as you would then need to change back come summer time as the wear rates are accelerated in the softer tyre. So you'd have to make that decision based on how much driving you expect to do over winter.
As far as speed ratings are concerned, do you expect to be doing over 149 in this weather?
Cheers S6.
I've had SO2's and F1's on my Tuscan and frankly got fed up only using 50% of the accelerator pedal or heartstopping moments in the cold or wet.
The Dunlop SP Winters Sports are 10 times better in ALL conditions! I make no distinction between dry or wet when accelerating, much more fun and confident, significantly reduces the risk of finishing up in a Breaker's ad!
The soft compound and perforations make all the difference. After 2 years I don't think the wear is so so different and I'm not fussed about doing +150mph in the winter months. There is NO compromise on handling/tramlining/etc. they perform first class.
I personally have a set of spiders with R888's for the summer and another set with the Sports. Alternatively pay to have the tyres changed over on the same rims.
You have to remember that over ~5 years you either buy 2 sets of ordinary tyres back-to-back, or 2 sets of tyres splt between the summers and winters...so no extra cost!
If I had to choose, I would have the Sports all year round, especially given the weather in blighty... But I would NEVER go back to ordinary tyres now.
I guarantee if u buy them you'll be back on PH within a few days writing how great they are
