Sold my Tuscan last year following new additions to the family and a demand from the guy with the bowler hat. Likely to return back to the fold with a new car early next year but still can't get my head around the spoiler on the "S" so will probably opt for a standard Tuscan.

Without wishing to start over the tired "TVRs are rubbish" debate, does anyone actually know if Blackpool have instigated a program of addressing common niggles so often discussed on forums like this? As an ex-owner, I fully apreciated what you buy into when owning a TVR but wondered whether I can expect better build quality from a 03/04 model compared to my earlier 01/02 model.

Cheers

I can only pass on second hand information... but looking at Alf Essex's Tuscan and ehasler's Tuscan (03 reg cars) neither seem to have had any problems..

The head in the 03 lump has modified oil channels or something meaning its less prone to failure by all accounts.

The two Tuscans that Podie mentions and most if not all of the T350's are running great.

Mine's an '03 and in the 5000 miles I've done so far, the engine has been tremendous. The oil consumption is far less than the reported half litre every thousand miles.
As to build quality, I can't say, having never stood mine next to an older model to compare, but reports of noisy roofs, poor boot fit etc. on other threads has never been an issue with mine.

I have an 03 Tuscan, and have had no engine problems at all. It hardly drinks any oil, has been used on track days, and is just fine.

My June 00 Tuscan RR is the same as the above. Mind you it did have a full engine re-build in May 01, and popped back in September 01 for a quick summer holiday in Blackpool, and while there got some new timing gear fitted. 13,000 miles later all fine.

I had an early '01 Tuscan and now have a late '02, and even between them there is a big difference in quality, so I guess you will see a huge difference with a new car.

My Tuscan is March 2003 as well.
I ordered the car in the summer of 2001, and because the delay of the LHD development, the wait was quite long. In the meantime, I read lots of posts here and on ToG, and I became quite concerned about quality and reliability of the Tuscan.
I have the car now for 7 months, and covered 5500 miles, including some long trips and 2 trackdays.
This car is so fantastic, and feels very solid.
It's much better build than any sportscar I had before.
My conclusion : TVR must have made a massive progress
in build quality and reliability over the last 2 years.
Make a testdrive in a 2003 Tuscan, and you will see what I mean.

As said above, and below for mine and ehaslers cars....they are incredible and both up to 6000 miles without any probs. Myself and Ed will be running around Silverstone way at the weekend so if you see us.

I may get jumped on for this but anyway...

TVR IS capable of producing a very high quality product.

BUT, the chances of getting a dog rough car are still something to be concerned about.

Lots of people on this forum have wonderful cars, and some (me included) have had horror stories.

My car was such a mess that a solicitor became involved and I got my money back. In all honesty I miss the car like mad, and just wish that Blackpool could turn out the cars with some degree of consistency.

The bottom line is this. If you get a good car then you will have a dream car. If you get a bad one it will be a nightmare.

If you do get a bad one then for goodness sake reject it and kick up as much of a fuss as possible if they dig their heels in. You WILL win in the end since the law is firmly on your side.

Fingers crossed you get a good one.

Quiet agree with this as in 2000 you did not hear of many 6 month old cars going seriously wrong although then there were still build quality issues.Although you still see/hear that this is still the case on some 2003 cars.

It was only in 2001 that finger follower issues were becoming more common with "some" of the earlier cars.I hope everone that has an 2003 built car is still as much as I am when I drive my 3 year old 17 K mile 2000 built car.

Why do I keep hearing the Jaws soundtrack while reading these Speed Six threads?

Oh no Podie has just dropped Alf Essex and ehasler over the side.

It's the optimism in the face of adversity that I find so utterly compelling. Yes I absolutely love the Tuscan - it's like a beautiful woman you can't resist despite her fatal flaws. You just know it's going to end in tears but you can't help yourself. I'm desperately trying to avoid her compelling but destructive clutches - not to mention her destructive Speed Six engine!

my july o3 tusc is now nearly up to 8k - no engine problems - apart from throttle bodies drifting.. only major faliure was a diff, but concensus seems to be that that was really just a "one off" as nobody else has had the same prob.

Jan 03 Tuscan. No probs, 6k service back in Sept dealt with the few very minor niggles that I had.

Build quality is certainly better than the last new Jag and Range Rover I had.

It is a bit quick and people do stare a lot and point and you usually have to talk to people about it if you park it anywhere. If you can put up with that though.......
