VIN Plate translation

Is there a way to 'translate' the info in the VIN plate other than last 4 digits are the build number and the 8th from the end is the year on manufacture?

Few alterations for Speed Six cars....S for SAG,T for Tuscan (4th letter)
6 for Speed Six (7th)

ok, the SDL I've got, the 7th (6 for Sp6) I've got, the 10th - 17th I've got, but no T for Tuscan, just an E (for Escort?) and the rest don't match. I suppose TVR's inconsistencies went as far as the VIN as well!

Strange..... my Tuscan Vert is SDLTC16A........ (TC for Tuscan Convertible i'd guess) and my Chim SDLBA03R......

I would have expected a Mk2 Targa to be similiar SDLTx ... x probably something different than a Mk1 targa...unless E is for a MK2 Targa as opposed to T for a Mk1 targa.

Hah, mine (mk2 targa) starts the same - as I said, TVR inconsistencies.

Suppose they might have used T in earlier years...TASMIN , original TUSCAN, TINA even , someone somewhere will know. (Tams,T350,T400,T440,Typhons would be later of course, and I doubt a Typhoon ever got a VIN)
