Here is a link to a picture showing the exhaust cans on our tuscan.

The question I have is whether these are the standard cans or not?

I was sold the car on a "car is as standard" basis. However, when I had it noise tested earlier this year, it came out as 108dB. A few people at the time told me they couldn't be standard cans at that volume. Now, I notice a few other people saying theirs came out at or around 108, but definitely with non-standard cans.

Not that I'd change them anyway - what is the legal noise limit for a car anyway?

Excuse my ignorance, but what are sleeves and how would I tell if they're sleeved?

Your cans definitely started out as standard, but may be sleeved - can't tell from the photos. Sleeving involves putting a steel pipe down the exhuast to block the little holes up. If you shine a torch down the cans either you will see lots of holes or a straight through pipe. By covering up the holes the sound deadening properties don't come into play.

Cheers,

Andy.

Ahaaaaa. Will have to take a look at the weekend, thanks a lot people.

Assuming they are sleeved, is it a simple job to temporarily unsleeve them again for the purpose of trackdays? (assuming I can afford to do any next year!)

Thanks! It's only "reflex purple" (according to TVR) or "multi-coloured" according to the V5 document.

Sadly not as shiny as that at the moment...

Legal limit for a road going car is 102db. I had to pass this to DVLA registar my Cobra (sadly now sold on).

In theory it is easy to change them, you just remove the sleeves and Robert Is Your Mothers Brother, however, in the real world, the sleeves pick up moisture and sort of wled themselves in place and so it is not at all easy (and sometimes not even possible) to swap them back!

Graham, with welded in sleeves and a spare set of sleeveless cans

I rather like this sleeve idea. Where can I get this done or is it an easy DIY. The reason I like the idea is so I can wake up my next door neighbour. As an assistant chief constable he can't afford to be late for work!

OK, taken a look - looks like it may be sleeved, will have to have another play with it and see what can be done..

Nick

Not to worry, mine was tested at 108 dB but that was at 5200 rpm which is more revs (and therefore louder) than what other people have registered. I will go back and get it checked at 4000 rpm, however, they will see through this as the test rpm should be 3/4 of redline (7000/7200).
