Can't lock car - advice please

Wondering if anyone could help and point me in the right direction. Last night when I put some things in the car the fob worked fine to lock and unlock the car. This morning it unlocked using the key fob but when I went to start the car, I could not get it to immobilise using the key, allowing the fuel pump would prime. I used the smaller plastic key in the part to the right of the instrument pod and it immobilised with no issues and the car started fine.
When I got to work, the key fob would not lock the car and after work would not immobilise and allow me to start the engine. The battery in the fob was replaced a couple of months ago so I don't think that's the problem. It rained quite heavily last night if that's of any relevance - having said that it has been all month and hasn't created this issue!
I only got one key with the car when I bought it so don't have a spare to try - on the to do list. In Ph's vast experience, is this definitely going to be key fob related or are there any things on the car itself that would be worth checking?
By the way, it is a 2000 Tuscan - have posted on this forum because I am sure there is overlap in alarm systems used on different TVR's. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If its anything like the Chim remote the circuit board can give a little and stop the little button going all the way down no matter how hard you press. My simple solution was to slip a bit of cardboard under the circuit board to raise it up a bit, problem solved.
Before I came up with this little fix the only way it would work would be to hold the remote upside down (button facing the ground) then tap sharply with a spare finger, pressing the button after each tap. It would usually unlock on the 3rd or 4th tap....

Thanks for all the help guys. I have taken my key apart and put it back together and all seems to be working for the time being. Think the key just wasn't depressing the switch sufficiently - will try the carboard trick if it happens again!
On a side note, I left a message on Carl's (tvruk.tv) mobile yesterday and he returned my call at 7pm prior to going into dinner at the Griff Growl. Fantastic service and he talked me through the likely cause and solution to the issue. Fortunately I have got my fob working but will be getting a spare one off him this week. Just thought it was worth a mention as you don't often get service like this.
