Im happy to report that it seems like my cooling issue has finally been resolved. Left the car with Dom at Power for a week and picked it up on Thursday. 100 mile trip home and then 100+ mile round trip on Saturday in the glorious sunshine getting stuck in a traffic jam for 20 mins and the car behaved impeccably. Fans on and off as expected with temp reaching a maximum of 98. I have to be honest though I must have checked the temp readings a million times!

Turns out it ws all due to... wait for it...

the filler cap having the wrong thread! furious This meant steam and water (when parked on my steep driveway with a hot engine) were escaping but more importantly air was being sucked into the system. This was creating airlocks which were giving the sensors dodgy readings which meant the fans weren't coming on and we were into a vicious circle.

Needless to say I'm delighted and will be out and about as much as possible to regain my confidence in the car.

Big thanks to Dom and the team for finally putting an end to this saga and thanks to everyone on here for their input. I have to say I'm bloody relieved it wasn't a head gasket as was suggested a number of times!

Cheers Steve. Maybe now I can think about going to a Berks or Hants TVRCC meeting
