Just came back from exeter (75 mile round trip) started with 20L got 18 miles away from home and was down to 7 but because of the bumps on the motorway it kept changing from 12L down to 2L! Managed to get home with no drama but I wish the fuel gauge was a bit more stable!

You need to average out between the high and low figure so you have a reasonable idea of the actual quantity.
But you just experiensed the phenomenon of "when will averages be of any use to me".
Thats the 10 year old at school on maths day not understanding Averages and wanting to be in the playground and hating the teacher and thinking this is stupid.
And yes I had a very lot to drink last night....this morning and am going back to sleep now.
