Just had 600 miles of faultless holiday in Devon. Went to put car in garage after a quick clean. Engine was cold after overnight rest....oil pressure was up immediately to 54...even on idle. Is this a switch or summit..........Christ.....I hope it's a switch yikes

Hi Chris, On a cold engine mine is up around 60-70, drops to 25 on hot idle.

Encoder ok still?

Hi Chris, yes the encoder is still fine thanks....did you get the one I sent back to you sorted?
Usually the oil pressure is about 9-12 on cold idle, & increases to about 20ish warm idle then up to high 40's to 60 ish when given some right foot.
I have never noticed it before go straight to 54 when started though. Is the pressure switch easy to access?

my oil pressure is high on a cold start..it drops when the temp increases....which is how i think is should be smile

could it be a dodgy oil pressure sender ? as far as i know, they go wrong quite a bit frown

Mines starts off high then lowers which is what it's meant to do as the oil warms and runs easier.

I'm high 40's early 50's at cold idle, (though it never gets to idle when cold) then at hot idle it's between 17 and 20.

mine is also 48+ at cold idle. Gradually drops to mid 20's, then when oil temps at 92c in heavy traffic it holds 17-18psi using mobil 1 0w40.

I'm beginning to think my mind has been playing tricks on me & I'm wrong about the usual "cold idle" figure.
I usually start the car & quickly flick through the screens till the oil & water temp screen comes up. I could have sworn that the oil pressure was usually 9-12. From what you all seem to be saying, that seems unlikely.............shout NURSE nuts

i always flick straight through to the screen that shows all the data.

That way you can monitor RPM whilst your warming the engine up.

Had the car for 4 years.......I know the rev notes in all gears below 3000 & related speeds so prefer to use the dedicated temp screen. Still trying to work out why my brain sent alarm signals when I saw 54 psi on start up though

Mine is 60-62 psi on cold idle then drops to about 25 psi at 80 degrees or so on hot idle.

Yep the encoder works fine now thanks so we are both sorted!

As for the oil pressure, I would keep an eye on it. Dont rush into swapping the sensor if its not needed and from what you are describing it sounds normal. Provided its higher cold and drops gradually as it warms up to around 20 at hot idle and 50 ish at above 2500 rpm all should be well.
