Went to view a lovely Tuscan S MK1 today and really loved the car.... Only negative thing was the car has been outside for a few weeks since its been for sale.. and due to the rain over the last few days the footwell carpets were very wet! The dealer assured me that it was only due to the very heavy rain and being left outside etc etc!! He informed me that it is a common Tvr Targa/convertible problem due to ingress through the targa panels, Should I walk away or is this an easy fixable problem.

Hi Sagman,

My Mk1 seems to only let the damp stuff in on the passenger side. The seal across the top of the window has a tendancy to creap backwards in the roof maonting. ALso, it tends to find a way in on the top leading edge of the door corner. The guaranteed fix is to cover the car of replace the seals. It wont be getting in from underneath or from behind the dash, left unchecked the carpets dont fair too well.

I think that you will struggle to find a completely dry Tuscan.
My Mk1 had the creeping seal problem as mentioned but once its your car and your looking after it then you will take the necessary steps to minimise the problem so I wouldnt walk away from what otherwise you think is a good example.

Hi Ian,

Lots of MK1's have little leaks here and there, easily fixed with new seals and a bit of fettling, certainly wouldn't put me off a car IF every thing else on the car was spot on and it hadn't been a long term leak.

Why cant the dealer sort it he gave the wrong answer IMO because TVR,s have a reputaion they seem to think customers are prepared to pay top money & accept it as part of ownership. I have a MK1 it does not leak bid him a low price on the car & do the seals yourself

Any half decent TVR specialist can make a Tuscan "TVR watertight" - ie you will get the odd dribble in, but no excuse for very wet carpets. And as it's got wet, why haven't they bothered drying it out, as it'll start smelling?

Not a guaranteed fix. Ive spent several months working with the Mk1 Roof however its a flawed design really. The top edge on the corner of the roof does not overhang the main rubber enough so water will seep and damp the rooflining. The sides of the roof are screwed and bonded on so if not enough bonding is used to fill the gaps you will again find water trails on your roof. The window does not sit flush with the front rubber and you will find water seeping in here also.

In all honesty you will not find one that does not have some form of small water leak you can however take measures to prevent as much as possible e.g. changing the seals, if your confident re-seal the side parts of the roof etc. I modified the front of mine so water trailed over the front rubber along with the rest of the that list. I still found leaks though so decided to purchase a later style 2nd hand roof which is a much better design. It will need some modifying however cuts out alot of the leaks. You will find the leak where the window touches the rubber pillar always having some form of leak however i may try playing with the window alignment.

I would defo say get a car cover... Wouldnt let this put you off getting a good example.

P.S. If a Mk1 check the boot does not leak. If so probably the lights were not bonded very well. I have just re-done mine today to stop any leaks.

TVR decided to use man-made bathroom carpet instead of wool carpet as they used to about the time they introduced the Tuscan. That says it all really.

Try not to use in rain and keep in a garage ,the problem will go away then.

What a great answer!!! If I had a leak in my house would you tell me to put a bucket under it! If something leaks surely the answer is to fix it, I just wondered if it was an easy fix or an expensive one.

I think they all leak,its hard to sort out i think.Thats whot they have all said ,mine leak when i brought it to.

sorry to state differently but no leaks over here
can't be the weather conditions (netherlands)
must be the build quality of the tvr
seen some practicly new tuscans (05,06) with poor lining (doors,boot,roof).

My Early Mk 1 does not leak anywhere. It was pointed out to me that there was an “upgrade” i.e a small rubber flap type thingy, added on later cars around the inside front top of the door, which rather than improve sealing, made it worse?
My roof is a Very good fit I have been told, so maybe I am just lucky

As regards the OP’s original posting, unbelievable answer from a dealer, as, if water leaks are acceptable to them, what else do they think is acceptable?,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, fools!
