if the thermostat is stuck :
closed => you'll have circulation problems (water temp will go up)but the heater could stay cold.
open => there's circulation (temp will stay lower than normal because it doesn't get regulated bij the thermostat) but your heater should work
so if your gauge gives a normal operating temp i don't think this is the right way to go.
you could have air in your system though.
i would still think of problems with the flaps

If it is your stpper motor--
There are two boxes on the passenger side of the engine bay. One of them will be lagged as this is the hot one containing the heater matrix. Unscrew this box and wrestle it away from the pipe going into the car (Will probably have lots of silkaflex on it!). Once off you will see a flap between the two boxes. This flap is controlled by the stepper motor under it. Straight forward job to remove this and re-fit the replacement (I've got the wiring written down somewhere if you need it?). Only fiddle is making sure the new motor shaft sits in the right position (attaching arm has a flat on it to locate a grub screw). I found that the new motor moves the flap from fully hot to fully cold in a much shorter turn than the led dial in the car. So cold is actually the second green led (when coming from hot). Turning it anymore just grinds the internal cogs of the motor. Taking the orignal motor apart suggests this was the cause of the failure as the cogs had near enough rounded themselves.
Took me about an hour and half to do mine I think.
If you do this and the motor looks ok, you will at least be able to see if the matrix is getting hot or not.
