Exhaust gurus...Help!!
Discussion
My Tuscan has just failed it's MOT on the state of the exhaust back boxes. I think it's time for a new system from the cats back but am a little puzzled by what I need. It goes in for a retest on Tuesday and the MOT mechanic has offered to weld the exhaust for now. However I would like to get a new system fitted then, rather than have to do one then the other(if that makes sense).
The car is a standard Tuscan with an S spec engine fitted (not red rose). The diameter at the cats is 54mm which I believe indicates that it's a standard rather than big bore exhaust. However my mechanic advised that the outside diameter is 65mm ...what does this signify? He seems to think it's a big bore system!
I have seen a standard system for sale that is 54mm at both the cat and can ends. I know the big bore exhaust is 57mm at the cat end but what is it at the can end and what outside diameter would it be?
Any clarification for a mechanical numpty would be greatly appreciated!

contact the nearest LONGLIFE EXHAUST shop to you http://www.longlife.co.uk/ They will take the car and make a custom stst replacement for you in a day and you may be pleasantly surprised at the cost. Had one made up for a 3000GT TT approx 7 years ago and it was a superb job.

Hi Mike
When I had my Tuscan I had some pipes made up to go from the cat back to the exhaust can but without the back box, they are sat at our yard so will try to get measurements of the 2 end diameters on monday or tuesday if you are interested Im sure we can come to some arrangement.

Something to be aware of, when I had RG's intermediate pipes and oval cans fitted to my T2S, it turned out that the pipes from the cats to the rears were of a non-standard diameter (TVR fitting whatever was to hand again?) so RG had to go have their intermediates adjusted at a local enginering shop so that they'd fit.
