Hi all,

Really need some help / advice...

My mk1 is in for servicing, and needs the steering rack replacing.

I'm not mechanically astute so please bear with me - I have been quoted £700 + VAT to replace.

I guess I need to understand options (if any), also pricing checks, etc..

Thanks in advance.

I would be fairly certain that the price quoted is to remove your rack get it refurbed and refit.
TVR Power recently did the rack on the Sag and the refurb was £400 including VAT and the labour charge £380 including the VAT.
Obviously the labour rate you get charged may be different but I would think the refurb charge would be similar from any of the specialists that can carry out that type of job.
Think I read a thread on here recently which stated that new racks are not currently available.

A refurbished rack from one of the TVR parts places costs about 450 quid (brand new they are about a grand) and then the rest will be labour, as it's not an easy job to swap - I'm 2/3 of way through doing mine at moment.

You could probably get your own rack refurbed elsewhere for less but you would still have to pay someone to do the swap and be left without the car whilst it was being done.

Does it need swapping due to leaks or play?

Thanks for the help guys.

I knew it was leaking, the guys servicing the car suggested something more sinister...

I took a call whilst in a meeting so couldn't pay full attention, so will call in the morning to discuss further.

Really missing it, totally bizarre... Wanted a TVR for many years, passion of the heart more than the head so you plan as best you can...

Now I truly understand the meaning when reading various posts of the 'pleasure' of ownership.

(Ahem, that's enough of the Sherry - now for the plastic mate to bail me out...)

Cheers again

Carlos, I had my mechanic remove my rack, he posted it off to:
M &P steering, Unit 22, Pier Road Ind Estate, Gillingham, Kent, ME7 1RZ. 01634-576654.

I phoned them a few days before so they could get the parts in.
They had it back to me in three days at the princely sum of £140 with a years warranty.

They were recommended by a fellow PH.

Touch wood, six months down the road, no problems and no leaks.

Thanks for this, really helpful.

Great community to be part of!

So, where I'm at is I'm having a new rack fitted, and will get the 'old' rack back. Guess it makes sense to get it refurbed (if it makes sense) then sell on.?.!

May not need to sell my house after all...

Cheers all - top bunch of peeps

Could you change to the Tuscan 2 rack whilst getting it done? Its supposed to be a bit easier to deal with being a little less rapid!!!

Took mine out myself, took it into power steering services who used to recon a lot of racks for a few on the southern main dealers, cost me £120 but is a bd of a job.
