How many coil packs does a tuscan have?
Discussion
How many coils packs doea a 2001 tuscan have? Am asking as i've just had my 3rd missfire in 2 years. The 1'st time they told me it was the leads. they replaced them to find the missfire was a coil pack. they fitted a second hand one for free. 6 month later another missfire, they fitted another coil pack and now i've got my 3rd missfire. just wondering does my tuscan have 1 coil pack whick keeps failing or does it have 1 coil pack per cylinder? other than spark plugs and leads, what else could cause the missfire? Any help would be great. Many thanks.
Could be all sorts
I would say do a bit of fault diagnosis, swap some leads / coil pack outputs and see if the problem follows, same can be done with the fuel injectors.
You see it could also be throttle pots, throttle bodies, lambda's, crank speed sensor etc the list is fairly long im afraid.
I would be wary of just swapping for another coil pack, its unusual for them to keep failing?

Fairly common in my experience, mine had 2 in the space of a year, been fine for a 18 months but when I put the old one back on the new engine the middle pair had gone down so needed another new one, seem to be fairly fragile.
If the misfire is the same as you had on the last times it's probably a good bet, my first 2 would be it breaking down under load at about 3500 rpm.

I think the problem is that the outer casing cracks and moisture gets in, probably something to do with under bonnet temps? If the misfire is the same as you had on the last times it's probably a good bet, my first 2 would be it breaking down under load at about 3500 rpm.
Does anyone think it's odd that the coilpack is bolted to the block? I've thought about moving it, not sure how much of a pain that would be.
The issue is where do you move it too? at the moment they are on the intake side so shouldn't be as hot as the exhaust side on the engine, if you moved to the inner wing you'll need much longer leads and it will be much more exposed to water ingress, its possible a heat sink of some kind could be used to stop the heat transfer, I'm not convinced that it would stop them failing though.
It does sound strange that you've had so many fail. Are you sure it's the coil packs? I've had one go in 50k miles. [touches wood]
If you're worried about heat, sandwich some heat shield between the block and the coil pack and fit the mounting bolts with tufnol washers and sleeves to stop heat transfer from the block through the bolts.
