What practical ish car to replace Tuscan with?

I love my 2001 Tuscan and have only had it since last summer. I hope I can hang onto it but with two kids, 10 weeks and 3 years, I think I will have to go more practical eventually, maybe a year or two's time. Just now we have a mondeo as the family car, but my wife increasingly needs a car and I can't/won't take the Tuscan in the winter. I do not want a cheap run about as another car. I can't help but look for my next car I'm constantly scanning autotrader and pistonheads even though I have no intentions of buying anytime soon.
So I'm very interested to hear your suggestions. What would you go for to replace a Tuscan. Must have 4+ seats and be usable all year every day. The thing I love most about my Tuscan, noise and looks.

BMW M3

I have this very same addiction, usually followed by going for a test drive, followed by deposit. There should be some kind of helpline for this

Is a Cerb + Snow chains close enough? 
Used to have an M3, loved it. took it to the Nurburgring on several occasions, on the second visit I drove almost as many miles on the ring as I did to get there then drove home and it never put a foot wrong (lapped 8.47), Don't ever think I'll be as confident of doing that with the tuscan.
I'm in a similar situation. Sold my T350 when my baby was born last year, and still looking for something interesting as a replacement. Had the idea of a 4x4 just as an opposite to the tiv, but not found a bargain, and won't pay top dollar as I don't really want one! Don't really want to go back to an older TVR in the Cerbera, and 911's still seem pricey for anything newer than 2002 (and I don't really like them!). Maserati Quatroporte is an interesting option...

Im in a similar position, i think my tuscan will be up for sale in July once the Chassis is stripped and redone and a few other little bits are sorted.
I had a BM 330ci before the tiv and would hate to spend 8k on top of that for whats basically the same car but abit quicker so that rules out the e46 m3. Im looking at 05-06 S4's as we have 15-18k to spend, want some thing practical, that the wife and new born can use daily but yet I can get some enjoyment out of at weekends.

If you want a bit more practical try a Jag XKR. Quite the opposite of the tuscan in terms of refinement but a very capable, very comfortable way to go fast and high mileages. Nicely balanced chassis (unlike a 911) and still very quick in supercharged form.
If you want a lot more practical I think the Mitsubishi Evo is a good way to go. They're no lookers but they are very quick on the road and track, and ultra tuneable too, so if you ever get bored, just give it another 100 bhp. There's lots of praise about the Audi RS4 around but I think you get a lot more for your money with an Evo and I think they are ultimately sharper round corners.
Personally I'd avoid anything with front wheel drive or with a rear engine. Try as I might I just can't enjoy driving either of those configurations.

I would probably go down the Audi/BMW/Focus route.
911's are too pricey for the year you are getting.
The Evo in certain forms have the performance of the Tuscan and certainly on twisty roads has the beating of the Tuscan but I think you would probably get bored of spine snapping ride and the fuel tank that is stupidly small.
Only thing with the Fucus RS is it's front wheel drive and the thought you are paying 25k for what is still a Focus.

Never driven a new M3 or know anyone that has one but I do like the looks in coupe form, (saloon does nothing for me and the convertible just looks strange with the roof up). V8 sound would be nice and they still are a little bit rarer just now.

Thanks for all the replies. I think its clear, it is hard to replace a TVR. The Masser Quattroporte V8 would be perfect if i liked the look of them. They just don't quite do it for me, but boy do they sound nice.
The VXR8 is a good one. Although not a vauxhall fan I do like the VXR8.
Tezza77 yes I think its fair to call it an addiction lol. I suppose its better than drink and drugs...well on the basis you have something to show for your spend at least.
M3, 330ci, RS4 or S4 have all got to be strong contenderss. If money would stretch then the RS4 is probably my preferred option of the 4, although the reliability issues raised by M3coupe is a concern. I have not researched any of the cars further than that looks cool and is fast
The jag XKR is a lovely car but rightly or wrongly I feel a bit young for it just now. The evo is on the list because I have been there twice before. 8 years ago I had a IV and then a couple of years ago I made the mistake of buying a modded VI. The car was good, it was just I like a little more refinement these days in my daily driver. I never knew this until I got it. I should have have gone VII onwards. I do worry the X would bore me quickly, but I worry about that with anything that replaces the Tuscan.
The focus RS, I think people are right. Its hard to consider it as its front wheel drive, would it put regular smiles on my face? I wish Ford would do a 4 wheel drive focus for the public. They would do it so well. Then there is the cost, its a lot of money for a focus, mmmm but they do look good.
Rens914 haha I like your post but will be fighting all the way lol. I had to show my wife your post too, she did laugh. If I thought I could go 12 years without a petrol release that would be great. As you say putting some money in a big pot would net me a nice car on top of the Tuscan money, but I'm going to be honest it won't happen. In 12 years time I will be wishing I had done what Rens had said lol.
In summary, this thread has made it clear to me, I think its hard to replace anything with the TVR badge for something practical if not impossible. After saying in my original post I would not consider a 3rd car(cheap runabout) I think I would be foolish not too.

Skyline GTR R34?
I had one and it was mostly superb. Lots more room in the back than the latest GTR too (which is a crazy backwards step for Nissan). Very hard ride on the road though but it made up for it with impressive track ability. Fantastic engine that RB26 too. One of the greats.
I recommended a Monaro VXR 500 (the supercharged 6 litre) to a friend with similar requirements to you. He found a 600bhp example in black for a little over £20k and absolutely loves it. He's pretty much got mad max's car. Thunderous soundtrack. Monster performance and much, much quicker and more imaginative than an M3.
