Decatting -facts and fiction
Discussion
I had a conversation today with a very-very realible source about cats or should we say lack of
We were discussing the set up of my Tuscan when it was mentioned that my car was De-catted
Well this was news to me! I mentioned that i had not noticed any real difference, having said that it looks like it was decatted before i bought it so wouldn`t know any better? Any way the facts about decatting are, a gain of about 1%(3bhp) at the upper reaches of the rev range and a louder exhaust noise, and loss of mid range torque, with the conclusion that the the performance difference would be unnoticable in a 370bhp car,
So the moral of the thread is decatt for the right reasons
Tony and a back on the road at the weekend T88CAN

Thanks H unfortunatly im working on Sunday so i won`t be out and about,it also seems that the running in critera has changed slightly as well,no need for 3000rpm max for a thousand miles, the first 250 then build up from there(recommended max of4500rpm) i was planning to get 250 miles in this weekend

I'd go along with most of that, youy can't really feel any difference at all performance wise, but I have found that the throttle response is slightly better and the engine seems to run more smoothly at a constant throttle (used to be a bit jerky prior to de-catting).
One other benefit (if your cats are shot) is the cost saving. £150 a pair compared to, what, £750+ for new cats AND I know of at least 2 PHers who've passed MoTs without the cats on

How do you get a car through an MOT without the cat? What if you are stopped at the roadside by the revenue raisers using mobile emissions testing equipment. In relation to noise, the standard cans are on the limiter for noise as it is.
Heard a T350 on Tuesday in Harrogate by the Stray (dark grey?) sounded awful. Just like a Max Power 1.1 Saxo etc with a big/blowing exhaust. Yesterday a Tuscan in the same place (silver/topaz?)(on the way to HHC?). Sounded far more distinctive and cultured. No wonder the cans are going back on the Sag, pointing at pedestrians for better effect. I was walking both times. Pity that nothing will ever sound like the TVR'd Rover V8. You knew that could be nothing else.

Interesting point about the MoT last year my car failed it`s MoT on emmissions, i now realise it had no cats in so it should never have passed, this would have been o.k but the fact that a TVR garage changed a number of items(lambda, throttle pot, leads, plugs, to name a few)charged over £500

any way his son must get enough money playing for Liverpool and England
Bl00dy rogues by the sound of it.
One of the 2 guys in question passed his MoT about 2 weeks ago (I offered him a loan of my cats but he didn't need them in the end).
The car failed but he went elsewhere and they passed it.
Says one of 3 things to me
1. MoT standards are not interpreted the same way by all test centres
2. A Tuscan without cats must be on the limit of acceptable emmissions so it depends on the centre and the day you get tested!
3. Dodgy test centres (perish the thought
