Mixing tyres...

Morning all, sorry if this has been posted/discussed before (I'm sure it has) but the search facility is currently down and I can't really afford to wait...

3 months ago, when I purchased my 2000 Tuscan, it had new Goodyear Eagle F1s fitted all round. Whilst the fronts are still in great nick, the rears are destroyed.

Thing is, I can't get hold of any new Eagle F1s for love nor money, at least not as quickly as I need them (i.e. fitted by this weekend).

So my question is would it be OK to fit a different tyre type on the rear? If so, any ideas? E-tyres suggested that Avons would be nearest to the tread pattern.

I'm running Avon ZZ3 all round - they were new on the car when I bought it.

Can't comment though on mixing across axles. I'm sure someone will have a view. I would say that the Avons probably are less 'sticky' than others I've had on my Chim....A different car I know - but an opinion.

At a meet last w/end and one of the Tuscans had Falken 452s on the rear.

I was in the same situation. I had F1s all round and needed to change the rears. I put on Toyo T1Rs (which a lot of specialists recommend for the Tuscan) which have a very similar tread pattern.

I hated the result - it really seemed to upset the car, with tram-lining, bumpsteer and skittishness. This was even though I had Gaz Golds and a recent geo set-up.

However I have recently fitted the SP spacers and the car now feels great - better than it did originally. Go figure!

Running Eagle F1 GSD3s on the rear with Eagle F1 Asymmetrics up front. I think they're a real improvement over the old GSD3s and the handling certainly doesn't seem to have suffered; if anything it's improved. Same as you, couldn't find GSD3s and had a bit of hassle finding Asymmetrics but go there in the end!

Had F1 GSD3's all round which are now obsolete so had F1 Asymmetrics put on the front instead. No problems what so ever and handled really well.

mine cam out factory with toyo proxes on it but I couldnt get them so ended up with the GSD£'s. the proxes were terrible in comparison with lot tramlining etc

Avoid ZZ3's at all cost - they do not perform well at all and tramline like a b**ch. Asymmetrics much much better.

I've run GSD3s on the front with Vredestein Sessantas on the rear with no problem at all. Have not tried the F1 asyms but prefer the Vreds to the GSD3s.

I had F1 GSD3s all round, and was lucky enough to get a pair when the rears needed replacing (I think it was Event Tyres if you want to try them). But I wouldn't have worried too much about a switch to F1 Asymmetrics as long as both rears were changed.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm going to put F1 asymmetrics on the back and see what happens. If there are any probs I'll switch the fronts too but fingers crossed. Thanks again.

OK I'm not going with that at all cos no one can provide by Friday and I need new tyres before the weekend. I'm now going with the original GSD3s on the front and Vredestein Sessantas on the rear, which was also recommended by my local tyre supplier, so we'll see what happens. Thanks BB.
