Im gonna De-Cat!

Thought about it long and hard... since the weekend!, so thanks for replies to my earlier post as they significantly helped.

I found out this week that New CATS can be cheap if your Tuscan is 2001 or older. They do not need to be 'Type Approved' for this age vehicle so can be purchased off of Ebay or similar for £138 ish.

However, you can still put these in your vehicle if newer but be warned they will not have the 'type approved' stamp on them and 'officially' it is against the law for the supplier to sell them to you if your vehicle is 2002 or newer. So... if you ask too many questions like I did, and you state your vehicle is an 02 or newer they will not sell them to you. (so read between the lines if your looking to buy new CATS wink )

'Type Approved CATS' are dearer, the cheapest I found was about £560 for a pair plus delivery, but sometimes prices went as high as £490 each!

So with regards to the topic:

Now I'm De-CATing do I really need the TVR Power De-CAT Chip?

Has anyone run their vehicle De-CAT without the chip? Does it really make that much difference?

(In for a penny, in for a pound, I'm going to leave the CCCs on too!)

Chap I do not know about the chip.

However if you leave the CCC's on can you please either take some sound vids or give me some honest feed back on how you think it is.

Mine is going in for a top end rebuild next month and I am very very tempted to get the cats out and have CCC's however I am driving up to Silverstone for the Britcar (around 160+ miles) and dont really fancy being deaf

I run with NTEL decats (very well made) and sleeved standard exhausts which are akin to the CCC's.

I ran for quite a while without the chip, and during that time i also did the roller bearing throttle bodies, which made a world of difference. The reason i mentioned them is twofold, i didnt notice any power change when i decatted, and no power change when i modded with roller bearings, but what i did get was driveability and smoothness, added to a much faster and crisper throttle response.

The chip, i installed 12 months later, chatted to Dom at power about it and he helped me out a little with it as i was having a set of Gaz Gold Pro's fitted by him at the time wink What happened was noticeable but nowhere near as much as it was with the roller bearings TB's, but i saw another improvement in smoothness and throttle pickup. I perceieved the car to have more pull through any gear, and was keener to rev, but this really isnt a night and day before and after, it was subtle.

You may get more of an effect if you dont have the roller bearing TB's, its worth doing but dont expect a big change...

As regards the noise, at low revs, and cruising, its not much different to standard. Its only when you open the taps it sound like hell on earth hehe Pops and bangs are obviously louder too!! But its not too bad on long journeys at all....

Daston I will give you a full report next week smile

Rob, you been away or sommin mate? The Tuscan forum has been a bit quiet this week?

Its still with David Batty, would've got it back this weekend but ACT chap has gone on holiday so will not post orders until next week and NTEL no longer makes them I'm afraid.

When speaking with David at 'The Garage' he said he wouldn't like to advise me to buy something that may make no difference (Power Chip) so suggested that he De-CATs it, sticks it on his machine to see where the readings are, and will then recommend whether to buy it or not which seems fair but could mean him having the car an extra few days if the chip is req. I can't even remember what its like to drive it atm....

but hopefully when i do eventually collect it De-CATed and with CCCs I can create my own thunderstorm on the way home to make up for it

i believe the tuscan runs to lean without the chip
when de-catted you need the chip
it also sorts out the dip in the 3k rpm range
F****k, wrong forum again :0)

am driving the enemy nowdays (P*****e)
running lean will cause higher temps and more ware
more fuel isn't only for power but also for lower temps
there is a small power dip at about 3k rpm
the chip solves this and more
you'll have noticeable more torque
the chip is only about 120 gpb

Decats and chip was worth around 20bhp gain over standard. But you won't get that without the chip.

Sports cats and chip was worth the same plus a bit more torque than no cats produced.

all measured on TVR Power's rolling road.

Decats and CCCs was too loud for me. The volume shot up but the quality of the sound took a nose dive. So it was a win win going for sports cats, even so they are considerably louder than standard cats. From a pure sound point of view the best it ever sounded was with standard cats and CCCs. It's more aggressive sounding now, like a powerboat on tickover but it is a bit more raspy than it was.

I currently have 200 cell cats (standard are 400) but Dom can get you 100 cell cats if you want. Or at least he could at the time I had mine done. No idea what the gains are if any over the 200 cell ones.

I'm all for noise (my Ducati with termis is cloud9) but I didn't like the noise mine made with decats and sleeved pipes. It was too harsh and very raspy on the over run.

I have some stubby carbon bike cans fitted which just take the edge off the noise and make it a bit deeper.

I'd def go for the chip. It does make a difference.

Thanks chaps.

Im gonna buy the chip.

Its pretty cheap (Dom reduce your dam prices)so will get 'The Garage' to plumb it in.

My car goes for nothing. If it wants it gets. But thnks to pistonheads I can make valued assesments of what is required and what is necessary. Thanks chaps, always a pleasure.

I ran with CCC and decats for a while.

Most of the time noise wise its OK but at a certain frequency it 'blairs' (best decription I can think of for the noise) and its not a nice sounds and can really leave your ears ringing.

But - decats definatley make a difference to the car - I got an easy extra 50 miles to the tank and it generally seems to run happier.

Tuscan now sold but if I still had it I would be experiementing with sleeved standard exhausts and de-cat combinations.

i cant see why any one aint taken the box out of the system and run decat with just the cans?

I ran my Cerbra with decat and just 2 suzuki gsxr race cans, sounded throaty (but there again V8s always sound good, Not too loud it got on your tits (like my old mexico did after a few miles with its constant droan) and let me enjoy the upgraded stereo .

Not much to report yet I'm afraid.

By the time I'd had a brew,a chat and left 'The Garage' it was getting late and the rain was thumping it down. Could only really get the revs up to around 4500 so didnt really hear too much difference although the overun was better with plenty of pops and bangs even in that miserable weather (Ive always found it pops more on a warm day).

But... cabin temperature was somewhat different and the gearstick was a nice luke warm instead of being hot. Ran smoothly without any dip in power.

Went through a few flooded areas on the way home up to a foot in water and it still didnt miss a beat so looks like the new coil pack has done the job too.

I didn't go for the Power Chip in the end. David Batty said it shouldn't need it and the guy at ACT where I bought the De-CATs said the same so am going to try without to see how I get on.

So far so good.

Take it through a tunnel/under a long railway brige with the roof off on full chat and report back to us once your ears stop ringing wink

That'll be a marmite moment, for me it made my mind up to put the cats back in

BTW, have you ever used TVR Fix in Epsom? www.elmwoodtvr.com They have some sort of relationship with TVR Power and Dom at Power pointed me to them to ge a minor job done under his warranty rather than drive the 100 miles to him (which I do for servicing on the rebuild he did)

Yes WhyTwo have used them.

Would rather drive my car the 100 miles. PM me if you want details.
