Gearboxlevel to low?

According the workshopmanual of the good Mr. Varley the gearbox contains 1.4 liter ATF fluid. After more than 2 liter the ATF fluid was running out of the fill/levelplug. Did I something wrong?
(the gearbox is in place)

empty gearbox drinks about 2.5 ltrs (ish). Think the 1.4 figure is from TVR's documention...and that is, well, questionable at best. Engine oil is also scary. A *fully* empty engine, sump and tank takes something like 9 or 10 ltrs iirc. The manual claims 6 (guess that's for service when you dont really empty it)
