Check your relays. This is the most common reason. My Mk1 has been doing this until I changed them both.

As a temporary solution to avoid your battery being drained, take the fuses for the fans out, and put back in before you drive off again..

^^ This has hapenned to me, it was a melted relay which had stuck in the on position. The only cure was to pull the fuse until the relay was replaced.

Happened to me last year and another 2S, becoming a very common fault ... I think I'll start carrying a spare relay smile

Have replaced my fan relays with an up-rated item, 45 amp instead of the standard 35 amp items. They are available from from most auto electrical shops just take the old one along for the correct pin orientation.

If replacing the relays has not worked I would try replacing the temp sender unit on the block.'£12 from RG and is as easy as changing a spark plug. I found that the fans will always kick in and run to protect the engine if a fault is detected. A hook up to the ECU will show if this is a problem as there will be a Water Temp log fault.
