Sorry but just had to do this.
Totally agree 373.
Me just got back from factory today to pick my little Tuscan up after its repaint (rosso is shit job). Had the same(ish prob) conversations, asking straight q's and getting straight answers.
After 12ish years of various TIVs, I was getting close to getting shut of TVR over the past few weeks coz of probs with the beast (not the dealer- Chris Neil).
Anyway....., fanfares, trumpets, dancing(naked ladies) etc etc, I am once again in luv with TVR!!!!!!!!!
They have been so bril sorting out the paint and putting rite loads of things I did not even realise were wrong.
And in answer to all those boring, damming, taking the pis and mostly JEALOUS q's regaring the speed six.... most of the problems are coz people run the engine on 4lts of fuel or less, which causes countless probs.
So: 1. If you have got a car that woz/is worth at least 40k then make sure u can afford the fuel.
2. If you aint got a Tuscan or other speed six equipped engined TVR, shut the up, coz THEY ARE BRIL and u know nout!
Thankyou.

That's really interesting... I never let mine drop below 30 litres unless doing a single long-distance trip, but I swear it runs noticeably smoother on a completely full tank than even on 35-40?

I agree with TUS 373 very good post!! But what happens to your car when it has to spend some time at the dealers.... I have seen customers cars being started from cold and revved, when they have to be moved around the garage.... Not going to do any engine let alone a SP6 any good!! TVR should start educating there dealers to show care as well!

With 35-40 litres the SP6 does sound/feel happier than 10-20 litres.

Although at 10-20 it feels perfectly fine.

How pleasant to see a well thought out and researched post about the Speed 6 rather than the uninformed drivel normally posted here by opinionated non owners. (No names, no pack drill).

Agreed.

It´s true about the fuel as I let it run very low once when I got lost and had a couple of months of rough running which eventually cleared itself. I think it had drawn up crap from the tank and partially blocked something.

Incidentally does anyone else have traces of rust inside the filler neck? I remember Mk1 Golfs having this which could lead to all sorts of running issues. Just a thought.

Good point. I feel uneasy about leaving a car at any dealers because you know that no one cares for your own possessions as well as you do yourself. I guess its a bit of a lottery.

I would like to think that TVR dealer mechanics exhibit the kind of mechanical sympathy that we are expected to show when an engine is cold, certainly not have the shift lights coming on as they approach the service bay!

If anyone has the skightest mistrust with there dealer you should either confront them, or them off and find a good one.

With regards to the low fuel issue. This was brought home to me when I was waiting for those luvly, handsome, sexy etc TVR chaps in workshop to finish my TUS off. As one of them started to pour 5 gal of fuel in at no extra cost, I quipped HOW NICE OLD BEAN, and I was told that my fuel was around 8ltrs and if it got as low as 4ltrs bla bla bla.
If that is not caring, what is?

TUS373 - thanks for your post - I am now totally assured that the Speed Six is a wonderful totally reliable engine - please disregard everything I said previously - I was just being silly - at last I can buy a Speed Six TVR and sleep at night - hurray, can't wait to buy one now.

i have to say that i'm a little sceptical about what they told you.i've had engine work on my tuscan and was informed at the time that the 2003 engines were using different cams.
i don't wish to get into an argument but it doesn't surprise me that someone at the factory says nothing has changed(FF's accepted)and they break down as people thrash them.
i have also never heard of anyone who has done 60K with no probs.i stand to be corrected but it sounds like a PR exercise to me and someone who was fending off a potentially peeved customer.

Fair enough and I can understand that view. I can only repeat what the factory told me.

I did take them to task over the issue of whether there have been design modifications or not and I was suprised to hear that all S6 production has been identical with no changes. The answer I got was: "speak to us at the factory and we will assure you there have been no changes". Infact, they were rather frustrated that such stuff is going around on the internet about 2003 and 2004 specs!!

I don't have the facts first hand but I have to place some faith in what the factory were telling me. It would be interesting to hear how many people have been given a different story, what the changes are and where this information has come from.

As for high mileages, the factory told me they have serviced engines with 60,000 miles and no rebuilds. They also have their own Cerbera their with 80,000+ miles and they claim - no rebuilds.
