I've done my searching through PH and found some really good info on fitting stereos, amps and speakers.

This has given me the confidence to go for a bit of an install myself. Done them before, but thought it would be a pain in the tiscan, but seems easier access than a standard car if anything.

so.. at the moment got the standard 4" pioneers in roll hoop with pioneer head unit and multichanger in boot.

My thinking is:

- replace head unit with sony Mp3 unit (something like cdx-f7700 is all brushed stainless and would go really well)
- dump the multichanger as mp3 makes it superfluous
- replace 4" pioneers with some 4x6 or possibly 5x7 infinities or JLs or summit (most 4x6 and 5x7 are OEM replacements though and don't come with grills which is a problem). I think 4x6 will definately fit.. sort of mounted at a slant. Dunno about 5x7s.
- small active sub behind passenger seat.. doesn't need to be big, but best if it could fill in a bit of bass too (<150Hz) rather than just sub and can therefore do the job that the small 4x6s won't be able to.
e.g. www.panasonic.co.uk/car-speakers/cjbl150/index.htm. That one looks crap, but that sort of idea would fit behind passenger seat a treat.
- possibly amp in boot to power 4x6s but to be honest, I reckon the head unit should have the oomf to power a set of 4x6s ok.

I know they are in crap position. Ideally I'd stick components in doors but don't want to get silly install going here. And I hate having speakers behind me so don't want to go for 6x9s on fake rear shelf.. also hate treble, so tweeters on dash would be pretty useless in affecting stereo image for me. I did think of a couple of little bose cubes in the front... dunno if that might pull the image forward ?

You'd think this is the sort of thing car audio places could help with, but in my experience they are all so far up their own arse anything less than a 10k install is 'market crap' and you just get nonsense from them. They all seem to have a 'record shop' mentality which is a bit pathetic to be honest. Previous installs I've done with cheap amps and mid priced speakers have proved excellent for my purposes before, so I'll stick with what I know works for me.

For example, in my mundaneo, I have some kenwood 4x25Wrms head unit and upgraded 4x6 speakers that previous owner stuck in. I have a small 5" bazooka active sub in passenger footwell. This is filtered up to fill in bass and subbass. Being so near me, it doesn't need to be powerful. This fills out quite well and gives a powerful sound without me inflicting it on every other roaduser in 100m radius....

With that all in mind.. has anyone upgraded size of roll hoop speakers ?

5 1/4 ?
4 x 6 ?
5 x 7 ?

Stu, what are roll hoop speakers ?. I've been thinking about upgrading my system for a while now, and as you can see, I'm not a techy by any means. I was thinking of the false rear panel and mounting another pair of speakers in it, with perhaps a sub in the middle ?. Interesting to hear what you say about a small sub within the seating area though, I'll have to give that some thought, I was also considering an amp, but as you say, I am not looking to wake the dead as I drive down the road.

standard speakers in B pillars/roll bar/hoop.

Upgrade ones are on rear parcel shelf.

I'd have thought sticking an amp there was inviting a brick through the window though....

have a read of this excellent article I found on PH:
