Does anyone know if:

The Mk1 and Mk2 brake m/cyls are different, and if so, are they interchangeable, or easily identifiable?

I am looking at a Geep at the mo but I found out this morning (during a test drive!!) that the brakes don't work !!!

It's been fitted with a remote servo at some point, and I guess this could also be part of the problem... I can't see any leaking fluid anywhere but will have a closer look tonight.

Thanks,
ax

The main difference between the earlier Mk1 Escort and the Mk2 Escort master cylinders are that the Mk1 tended to be a single line cylinder. To feed the four brakes (via 3 lines Two at the front one to the rear) a 4 way coupling was used shortly after the master cylinder.
The Mk2 Escort had a dual circuit master cylinder which has three outlets on the actual master cylinder. One supplied the rear brakes and the other two supplied the front brakes (left and right).
The better system is of course the Mk2 dual circuit master cylinder as it has a built in safety in that if a line is fractured then the vehicle should have at least 50% braking.

As you are most likely aware (especially if you have visited the technical web site)servos are a no no on the Geeps/Sandero's as they cause over braking which can result in the rear of the vehicle coming around and spinning the vehicle off the road.

If there is excess pedal travel this is remedied by use of the modified push rod (details on the technical web site www.joctechnical.org.uk )

The Mk2 Escort cylinder usually fits the bulkhead steel plate on the Mk1 Escort based kits as the fitments are the same.

Thanks, that was really helpful.

It would appear the Geep has a Mk1 m/cyl then - I don't know who fitted the servo. So I can either get a Mk1 m/cyl and keep the servo, or a Mk2 cyl and replace all the brake lines at the same time, and remove the servo.

It defo looks like an m/cyl problem - the brakes need to be pumped several times before they work each time I need to stop. As soon as the pedal is released, the same problem occurs.

Anyone know if there's a rebuild kit available for the Mk1 m/cyl? It might be worth a try and is probably easier to get hold of than a decent 2nd hand Escort m/cyl these days...

There may still be kits for the Mk1 master cylinder out there but depending on how much you want to pay you could even just go the whole hog and buy a new (factory reconditioned) Mk2 Master cylinder then you will know it will be fine.
Your local motor factors or brake specialists should be able to help you out if they have all their books.

There was a company who had a stand at one of the shows last year who had MK2 master cylinders for reasonable money.

I think this is them GMS Capri Spares on 0191 3771718
May be worth a phone call.
