Has anyone got any experience of fitting a roof rack to the Geep.

I have a fairly standard Geep with a soft top and I want to fit a rack for carrying some canoes. Obviously its fine when its sunny I remove the roof and carry them straight on the roll bar and top of the windscreen.

I want to be able to keep the roof on and still carry them.

The back frame is quite easy I'll just bot to the back bumper.

The problem is the front. Where would a good place to connect the uprights to.

I have side steps but I'm not totally convinced as to their strength because they might be fine with people but with a person and the from of the roll cage on them I'm not sure about the strength. The other option is welding a bar underneath in front of the side steps and putting the uprights to this.

The simplest option I have is to put a couple of bits of wood well padded directly on top of the tilt and matched against the top of the windscreen and the roll bar. Any thoughts on this as a simple solution.

Cheers for any help

Dave

Your best bet is not to use the hood at all. I collected a large chest of drawers at the weekend and strapped it to roll bar and screen surround. No probs except that it felt like the handbrake was stuck on.
Seriously- how's about a frame on the front bumper, braced back to the screen.
Cheers

When T4 was on the road many years ago (before I started doing the rebuild) I made a rack to carry canoes and the likes. It was attached to both the front and rear bumpers and the main carrier frame sat about 2 inches above the roof.
I served very well for quite a few carry jobs.

Not sure where the pictures are which I took at one of teh Newark shows when we used to do the dressing up contests.
