Can I but-in.
As due to family probs -serious illness - I cannot get to Newark I have blown part of the budget on a 2l Pinto ex Transit. From another source I have been offered a Mexico diff.
Am I correct in thinking I can mate up to my 4 speed gearbox - 3 bolt starter mounting by simply, jettisoning the Transit gearbox adapter plate, changing the flywheel from the pinto with the one off my Xflow and Bob will be my uncle.
I have been offered a 5 speed box but it had a doughnut type propshaft. Is there a UJ fitting propshaft which will provide a substitute?

Hi Dave......I'll have a look in my mags over the weekend for you, bound to come up with something! Probably it'll be a bit quiet over the weekend on the Forum as it's Newark this weekend and alot of JOC members will be there and away from the computer.
Keep counting the days lol!

John, dont think its quite that simple, i believe it is possible with the 1.6 x flow box but is wiser and easier to keep flywheel off OHC and fit 4 or 5 speed box off a cortina or sierra with correct splined clutch plate. Think you will then need to cut ends off matching prop shaft pieces (gearbox and diff, omit donut) and get one made to length. IIRC starter motor moves to other side of engine bay, so wiring needs to be chopped around aswell. Dont think (but dont quote me) that x flow starter is same as pinto either.
starter motors seem to fit ring gears - it seems
its quite important to note what came from where if you know all the info then readubg a parts book can find some interesting facts escort rwd plate and pressure plate same as small sierras [alledgedly] dif thrust though.....ford are pretty lazy mostly so lotsa stuff is samey.....but you need a friendly accespry shop to look at books numbers etc
if it worked in one installation it will probably work in another
will tell you if this is good advice when i try to auto samuri
bits from everywhere!!!

Oi've never seen anyone do that before...
Best to keep the Pinto engine and gearbox together I would have thought. Mark Colvil did that transplant.
The xflow four speed box input shaft will fit the Pinto spigot bearing (in end of crank) but the clutch disc will have to be the xflow cos the Pinto splined centre is larger.
The Taunus one (see Jago Forum passim) for the 5spd box on a crossflow has the larger centre splines with the smaller overall diameter.
The xflow bellhousing will be required cos the bolts into the box are on a smaller pcd but the flywheel is the same size so no matter where o'clock the starter ends up, it will engage. The xflow bellhousing will fit the pinto but the OHC tin plate will be required. The xflow one will as well after a little angle grinder work. Just clamp them together and duplicate the profile of the centre hole of the one you'll be using. It's not critical as some owners don't even fit them.
Giant meccano (c) when all's said & done.
Cheers

thats very useful
i believe i may have been tild about that maybe at last years newark....buttt....maybe i'd had a couple of drinks [alledgedly]
i doubt it covers autos if it does wow that would be really useful to me
unless my new best friend ferretty reg has the starter that was fitted to the flexplate and torque converter he promised me
i can only hope
if so my red sammi may be up and running in auto form
if i can get off my ass and do it lol
i keep telling myself "i like doing this"
