What on Earth have I bought??? Help
Discussion
I went to the auction and purchased an "E" reg Sierra 1.6 Estate with 5 speed box.
It had a recon engine fitted in 1999.
Got home opened the bonnet the engine does not look a lot like the Pinto I recognise - there is a distributor affair on the front end of the camshaft - what looks like an electronic ignition trigger module and wire near crankshaft pulley. Carb is on the right hand side.
Looked at the reg doc it is 1769cc and eng No JC36059.
Does anyone recognise what the engine is? - I have to say it runs as sweet as a nut 12 miles home and it pulled like a train - an express train.
Reconditioners book says only use unleaded.
The gearbox has a doughnut not a UJ - any solutions to finding a propshaft to fit with UJ.

Engine ID problem solved - I rang a mechanic mate of mine and he had the answers - no problem - this will interest Tonka.
The engine is a CVH - evidently the late Sierras were fitted as standard with a CVH - all Ford did was move the distributor from rear of cam to front and fitted a different flywheel etc to take Sierra gearbox. Late model Sierras with 1.8 on the boot lid have the CVH engine as standard.

Cheap is the right word I think.
The bidding went to £30 - not even the reserve I ended up paying £65 including the autioneers fees.
According to the clock less than 11,000 since the recon engine was fitted and I have the reciept for the engine etc - so it is genuine.
The scrappy will give me £20 for it after I have stripped the engine box - light bulbs etc and chucked in the knackered xflow.
BTW Drseg do you have a wiring diag for the electronic ignition?

Yes you will need the biggest part of the engine bay loom and all the various electronics (including the electric part of the choke system).
What I did for Panther was spend quite some time un covering the complete front loom for the Sierra then figuring out what was needed (engine electrics) and what was not required (lights etc) and then re covered the engine loom so it all lined up with all the various components the engine uses.
Also used a fair bit of the lighting wiring (as a separate loom) to update the old Escort front light wiring to make that part more reliable.

Thanks for the help guys - I am now cursing myself I am sure that at a boot-sale last Sunday I saw a Sierra manual. Looks like I could have done with it for the wiring diagram.
Yes I have seen the trigger sensor down by the front pulley.
Neat idea upgrading the lighting wiring using the Sierra loom - I wonder will the Sierra switch stalks replace the Mk2 column mounted stalks. I had considered using the Sierra instrument panel - maybe the speedo will be more accurate.

Just a thought, and probably doesn't apply, but vauxhalls (the newer ones 90 on i think) if you swap an engine i think you need the ecu, ignition and key. as theres a transponder type anti theft set up thing. If none of it matches your stuffed. Read of loads of people swapping for more powerful motors taking ecu out, scrapping car then not having matching key and ignition barrel.
Dont know if Ford employed this method or not, but dont scrap it till you got it running LOL.

The Sammie engine bay is slightly less cramped than the Geep/Sandero bay.
Thankfully the Sierra I used for the main amount of parts did not have any transponder items fitted but yes if you have the whole car it is worth hanging on to it until you have finished the transplant.
There is no reason why you can not use the Sierra switch gear. I only used the wiring and kept the Escort switch gear only because I was having to go to breakers yards for anything I needed after the original yard short changed me on my original wish list when I bought the engine/gearbox combo.
I did up grade a fair bit of the system by fitting a blade fuse box in place of the original ceramic unit which meant I could add extra fuses and circuits for any up grades at a later date and a more reliable electric set up.

urghhh my sammis wiring is......well....erm... not very good [i didnt swear but if you add any expletives you can think of thats what its like]
still got stupid pointy ended ceramic fuses which stopped almost everythin' working
they have to go
incidentally getting harder to get them anyway
i'm told last company stopped making them 3-4 years ago
friday sammi goes to where it will be autoed [or its grave?]
cheap prop repairers anyone - geep has a defective front joint and rear one cost 70 quid quickly done and now circlipped but i could do with cheaper its a mk 2 style staved in one

HI Jon, re manuals you may be able to download the whole lot relevant to your car - I have pasted a link in the thrread for Haynes manuals but will stick it in here again:
http://faq.ford77.ru/info/manual.htm
it is one of those things that seems too good to be true!!
Meantime I am persevering withthe old fashioned photocopies- be sure to send your address ,
Cheers

Hi Jon,
Copies were duly done yesterday- bound to "come in useful" down the line! I also found some autodata pages relating to changing cam belt, too.
The link does work - I downloaded a complete copy of "Powertuning Ford's OHC engine", yesterday and the quality is great; and no I don't read Russian it is in English!
