Anybody got any suggestions............
Mark 1 1300 x-flow (not GT) ticks over ok with an occassional hiccup but pops and spits when revs increased both through exhaust and back through carb , CO at MOT yesterday 1.12 , timing set correctly , valve clearances checked , timing cover removed valve timing correct , all new ignition parts fitted , plugs etc and double checked on Crypton machine which shows no fault on ignition side at all , carb however is a brand new single choke Zenith 30 IZ ? fitted by previous owner , we believe round about time it last ran!!!! Never seen one on an Escort before , Sedgy is 99.9% sure its overfuelling above tickover due to carb possibly being off a Zephyr!!!!! , does anyone have a spare single choke carb for a 1300 with/without manifold ? need to do a substitution before I start ripping engine to bits.
Compressions 165-170 all pots.
Thanks
Mark

Finally after what seems like an eternity we have got to the cause of the problem..........
Sedgy spent a day and a half up here checking and double checking , sustituting parts etc but we still came to the same conclusion somehow the ignition timing was all over the place from one start-up to the next
A decision was reached Saturday to throw the existing engine over the nearest fence and a £10 Ebay replacement collected from Leeds on Monday.
As of 8pm last night we have a healthy sounding Geep and with the sump off the old engine we found a bent? camshaft with very strange wear patterns , presumably a result of whatever damage prompted the previous owners to rebuild the bottom end............
One happy owner "Jeff" one very happy "Tonka" and "Sedgy" tipped for the New Year's honours list......

cam was bent enough so dizzy not meshing consistently
but the story did not end there
press clutch pedal down and it stayed there
not only had clutch arm become detatched from pin on passenger side but head of pin was flat sided allowing arm to fall off pin as well as thrust bearing retailing clips having long since disappeared meaning nothing was holding arm onto gear box
luckily tonkas vehicle dismantlers [Doncaster} ltd were able to supply parts from stock and after an hour of taking it in and out we had a superbly driving vehicle [unsure of drum brakes however lol] ahh well thats what messing with old cars gets you [sigh]
