Register on here LJ, its a bit busier, then let us talk you round. They are at the end of the day in a word - old, so do come with problems attached. My cyl' head has been off twice in the last 4 months! Its always worth the hassle though when you drive it back outside with the hood down and take it for a blast.

Best bet is to find another owner who will let you crawl over and under their car and possibly drive it. Works wonders for the morale. Remember that kit cars are only giant Meccano, the rest is psychological- that is you have to be a psycho !!! And there'll be a few of us at Donington.

some faults are frustrating [how do you figure for a bent cam on a crossflow but thats another story]
some faults are created because the new bits you fit just break the old bits you fitted them to
and some are just the result of old age newest escorts used on geeps are 25 years old if you have some mk 1 bits could be from 1968 [makes me feel old remembering my grandad buy brand new mov245f 1100 dark blue] 37 years ago!! they can be frustrating but someone has usually seen the fault before unlike modern all electric vehicles [skoda octavia leccy windows had to go on a laptop pc to get the diagnosis "drivers side window switch unfeasable response" which meant wiring broken] keep plodding at it LJ roof off in the summer its worth every swear word scraged knuckle and moments of utter desperation to be driving something very different and so much fun get to meet some good folks too and all for seriously little money
just off to scrage my knuckles on my samuri i'm sure it'll be just as frustrating if i ever get it finished

In the end, what you get is the most posible fun on 4 wheels!

When I got yellow (which was bought for spares) I knew what was missing before - it was not MY kitcar, yellow had to be a total rebuild and is now MY car - constantly under review and revision - Fantastic fun
So dont give up, go to it. If it you cant get a part then its time to alter the car to take what you can get!

Alternator or Dynamo? You can tell by their outward appearance LJ. Dynamos are usually steel & fairly long - similar to the starter motor. Alternators are about the same in width as in length with alloy casings.
The first thing to check is the simplest - the fan belt - if its still there & tensioned up ok then read on.
If its an alternator there will be two or three wires to it into a multiplug - check that this plug is secure. If you have a multimeter check that one of the heavy wires goes to earth, and the other has 12 volts.
The small wire is linked to the battery light on the dashboard - when connected to the alternator with the engine off it goes to earth and switches the light on - if you disconnected the multipin plug with the ignition ON and the light stays ON then the wire has shortcircuited to earth somewhere in the loom causing the light to stay on. If it goes OUT then the alternator is faulty and needs to be replaced.
Good luck - any probs get my number off a copy of Tranmissions and give us a call.

Plug not fitted to alternater properly, becomes loose,and the next thing you know, smoke is filling the inside of the car, wiring is melting and sticking together, not much fun sorting that little lot out under a lamp post at 1am on a damp morning in Beeston, just as my pride and joy (namely one HB Viva GT) was about to go up in flames.

got it sorted
it was the battery it was flat no water in the sells
and the mutiplug was removed
so its all ok now
and if u remove the mutiplug the light goes out like it should as there is no feed if the light stayed on u have a fault i should know this as i have passed my car wiring exam and got a credit pass as well. so i have a jeep up and running again but thanx for all the bits of info cheers.hope if still in recovery service i might be at doninton with the beast hopefully.
