Hi techsec if you're there, a bit of help please.

I assume that the 1600 x-flow engine in my Samuri would originally require leaded petrol, but do I have to get the head converted to take unleaded fuel or are there cheaper alternatives? Someone mentioned something that sits in the petrol tank and does the job of the lead. Do these things - whatever they are - work? Any views or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

The company most associated with lead-free conversion (new valve seats) is Ferriday. They have a website. As for additives or in-yer-tank danglers it might be worth checking out Honest John of the Telegraph at www.honestjohn.co.uk - could be something in his FAQ.
Cheers

Hi
Sorry for the delay in replying have been away relaxing (???) for a few days.
Really the only sure way of running unleaded is by having the heads converted properly.
As Ian has said Ferriday's are a good firm and I have used them on several engines including my own V6.

Don't bother with anything that fits in the fuel line or the tank for protection against valve recession.

This sort of thing was tested by the FBHVC a few years ago, none worked at all, the additives did, some better than leaded petrol. Try www.fbhvc.co.uk for more info.

Use a proper FBHVC approved additive or get hard seats fitted.
