Advice needed.I am currently doing a deal to buy a 1966 Jago Jeep. The chap was going to mot it but unfortunately it needs some welding. My question is, what kind of problems arise with this type of repair,ie heat/fibreglass.I have never owned or worked on a kitcar before, any guidance would be a help.Other small problem is car is 200 miles away so have not seen jeep in flesh(just lots photos)THANKS FOR ANY HELP. IAN.
Hi Ian
Good luck with this one !!! The floor will be marine ply so you can't soak it with water if welding nearby. GRP just melts and sags if it gets hot. Too hot and bye-bye body. Safest would be to remove body or any panels if near to the area needing the welding.
Can't really think where it would need welding as the chassis box section is quite a thick gauge steel (10, 12???). Has it been dinged???
Cheers

Hi
Regards the 1966 part of the registration this is most likely from the donor car as Jago Jeeps/Geeps were not produced in 1966. If I remember correctly (for further info check out www.joctechnical.org.uk) the production of the Jeep/Geep kit started in 1971.
Yes the best advice regards welding the chassis is to remove all the body work etc otherwise like Ian says you may find all you have left is a mass of metal and white dusty fibres.
The chassis's are quite solid units but under certain conditions or due to lack of preventative maintainance could rust through.
