Well it's not new actually, but new to me at least. It's a 1983 escort based. I have a few questions. I want to respray it with synthetic paint, what preparation do I need apart from the usual stuff to paint a metal car? Can I waxoyl underneath or will it play havoc with the wooden floor? What steering link is used to connect to the rack? I see that the rubber at the bottom of my link is falling in bits. Thanks in advance.
You are best using a fibreglass etching primer prior to using any form of paint to ensure good bonding.
Waxoyl should not adversely affect the underside of the floor.
For the actual under floor we recommend the waxoyl underseal.
The steering linkage is (rubber part) from the Escort and second hand items can be purchased from places such as Ian Harwood 0151 3392801
It may be worth also trying to contact GMS Capri spares on 0191 3771718 as they may have some new items available.
The alternative is a steering column Knuckle joint which can be purchased from somewhere such as Europa Specialist Spares (their part number is UJSC) www.europaspares.com to replace that link with a u/j type joint.

Thanks for that. I've been quite busy, ripped out a load of useless wiring, welded a new piece in the exhaust ,sorted thru the back brakes and hand brake, done a service and a few other bits of stuff. It's all comin together, but I have no wiper motor or rack. I know what fits and where to get it,but where does the motor mount ?
I used a Mk 2 mini motor and rack, with 3 wiper boxes.
You can get these new but it will cost, or try a scrappy.

I think theirs are quite a good price but shop around as some people charge lots.
You'll have fun with the wiring, If you get stuck I can probably help with the wiper wiring, but not the basic Escort loom, as I scratch wired mine & used aftermarket instruments.

The fact you have got a 1983 Jago requires you to do a bit of work regards fitting the wiper motor but it is possible.
Basically the early/mid Jago's used the Anglia 105E wiper system or the early Escort unit which was a small version of the system most cars use (bars and ball joints with the motor mounted near centre of the bars. This sat on top of the "shelf" that is the windscreen to body joint (the later ones had the windscreen butting up behind the front scuttle rather than sitting on top.
The method I have used on T4x4 to fit the BL (Mini) wiper system is to cut a hole in the windscreen/body shelf on the passenger side (if you e-mail me direct I will send you some digital pictures of it) Then as per the usual set up you fit the wiper boxes on the lower windscreen frame panel and cut the outer pipe that carries the inner cable to the correct lengths to go between each box and the motor.
Remember to flange the end of each outer pipe so it locates in the wiper boxes (this helps stiffen up the whole system otherwise the wiper motor can try walking around when in use.
Also you will need a piece of the outer pipe on the end of the last wiper box so it keeps the inner cable covered when it is at its furthest stroke.
hope this helps you out.
If you need the "conversion" for the mini to Escort wiring of teh wiper motor I can provide this info.
