Hi guys. bought a jago last week after a long search,signed up with the owners club,drove to euro kit car show in detling today with hundreds of questions to ask my new club mates and guess what? no-one there! where were the jago boys? guess ill have to wait until stoneleigh (will there deffinately be people there?) until then can anyone tell me how important exact tyre size is.i bought some part worn 215/70/14's to pass the mot as 75's are hard to come by.can i buy 195/70/14's or 215/70/14's as there are loads more about and i like the white letters on the side.any advice appreciated, cheers ,jamie

Shame you did not see any other club members at the show. Unfortunately that's how it is sometimes. Apart from that did you enjoy the show. Perhaps you could write in to the editor with an article of your first show (even though you were on your own).
There should definitely be some members at Stoneleigh. If not I will know it is time for me to pack it all in.
OK tyres.
The usual tyre size on the Geep/Sandero is 185x14 or 195x14 but not commercial rubber.
Other sizes used (standard 6jx14 wheels) are 205/70 x 14 and on some I have even seen 175x14 (not sure why someone would want to go that thin).

Well I've just completed the set of Colway C-Trax MT 235/75x15 with a pair on the front and a spare. The plot now goes where it's pointed and doesn't wander about all over the road. Tread width on the road is about 8" and they are good on the tarmac with a pleasing hum and very comfortable on the repair (!) bumps.

Off road they inspire confidence but see my previous comments about lightweight cars on wide tyres. Some ballast required for best traction. The only negative thing I noticed was that I seemed to bring a lot of mud home with me. Yes the mud was deep- over the tyres and into the wheelrims but whilst the gaps in the treads cleared, there was a good deal of clag left on the shoulders.

Take it out & get it dirty !!!

IanA Friday 27th December 2002 So what is it with me and tyres???
Having told you about the 205/75x14 Cooper Discoverer STT tyres on my 1700 5spd, I've just fitted a pair of new tyres on the rear wheels of my 1600 4spd. This has 15" wheels so I went for a pair of C-Trax MT in 235/75x15 (9.50x30x15)from Colway. A snip at £38 each (+VAT), I bought them through C.A.R.S. in Matlock and had them shipped to a local tyre dealer who I knew would not be afraid to fit and balance them.
I went down my local muddy track today and got through OK (!!!) but not without some wheelspin. I put this down to the lower diff ratio and the gonzo size of the tyres. They certainly look the business but without some ballast in the back, there's just not the contact pressure to do them justice. It's a common problem with "over-tyred" cars in slippery conditions. The 10x15 Ridge Runners on the front now need to be replaced to regain some extra directional stability now that the traction is sorted.

IanA Sunday 1st December 2002 Well, I've finally got some mud on the Discoverer tyres and they are impressive. I'd forgotten just how much difference a new chunky tread tyre can make.

I've tried not to be over confident, especially as I was alone, but the local byways remain passable after weeks of rain.

The treads cleared well in the water splash before getting back on the road where they are comfortable and not at all harsh.

Overall- money well spent.

PS the Desert Dogs have been sold.

IanA Thursday 22nd August 2002 So now I have 4 Formula Radial Desert Dog tyres going spare. They are 27x8.50R LT 14" with an aggressive chunky tread and are only half worn (if that). That bad ozone has caused some cracking on the inner sidewalls so they won't MOT but would be great off road. Only £30 for the 4. I live near Oxford.

IanA Friday 16th August 2002 Well, the Cooper Discoverer STT 205/75R14 tyres have arrived and I had them fitted today. The tread on the road is not as wide as I'd expected but these are serious off-road tyres for muddy conditions. I would not like to get stuck somewhere that these wouldn't get you out of.

IanA Monday 8th July 2002 Hi All
I've just ordered some Cooper Discoverer SST 205/75 x 14" tyres from Sinton Tyres in Milton Keynes on 01908 665591. They're costing £64 each and are on 4 weeks delivery from USA. Sinton bring over a container load of Cooper Tyres every 4 weeks or so. They have a great website at www.sintontyres.co.k where you can get all of the specs and see pics as well. They have 4 off 27x8.50R 14" tyres in stock but only in the "less aggressive" standard Discoverer pattern.
I've left a 10% deposit and will let you know how I get on. These tyres have the nearest tread pattern I've seen to the "Desert Dog" radials I need to replace.

Make sure that any tyres you get are suitable for the weight of the Jago.
Commercial grade tyres are usually reinforced and may act like solid rubber when fitted on a vehicle such as a Jago.
The average Geep/Sandero weighs 750kg.

I have the same problem- urgently need to replace some 14" chunky tyres (27x8.50R14LT) and don't want to lower the gearing too much (or make the plot look too weedy).

I phoned Southam Tyres today and they directed me to a local dealer who can get Cooper Discovery tyres in 205/75x14. No prices but check out ST for your local dealer.

Colway probably do 14" M+S pattern remoulds but the accent is on low profile to lower the gearing as much as possible for rally car use- not really what a jeep needs !!!

techsec Monday 17th June 2002 We will soon have some near new 185x14 tyres (5 of) available.
These have quite coarse block pattern similar to a reasonable M/S tyre.
The price will most likely be £110 for the full set.

For some tyre statistics, check out

the important column is third from right which gives you the number of revs per mile. Look at the way it changes with aspect ratio. Work out the % difference and it will tell you by how much your speedo reading will vary as well.

Must get out more.

a few questions for the wise.
will any other ignition barrels fit my geep(mk1 escort)?
if not where can i source a mk1 barrel with key?
where can i find washer bottle and pump(again mk1 escort)or will i lose originality marks if i use new kit car bottle and pump?!
can new carpet sets be bought from jago for geep?
is it possible/advisable to insulate/trim inside of hardtop roof,or has anyone tried this?
Im having trouble sourcing NOS ford parts so any advice on where to try would be great. thanks in advance for your time.
