Run-flat tyres, front electric windows, engine starter button, adjustable steering column along with passenger seat height adjustment and BMW Business CD player also feature.

The SE benefits from automatic air-conditioning, leather-clad multi-function steering wheel, rear Park Distance Control, an auto-dimming interior mirror and a centre arm rest all come as standard. Front fog lights are there to irritate other drivers whilst 16-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels set the car apart from the cheapo model.

Sport is the final model offered. All Sport models come with 16-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, automatic air-conditioning, sports suspension, sports seats, sports steering wheel, front fog lights and Black Gomera trim. For buyers of the 116i and the 118d who select a Sport model, the standard features list also includes colour-coded exterior bodywork.

There's also a whole range of extras that can be specified on all models. BMW’s Business navigation system, which includes the fitment of the iDrive controller, can be added as can full leather upholstery, all round Park Distance Control and xenon headlights. A Comfort Package is another option that includes rain-sensing wipers, a Storage Package, cup holders, front armrest, interior auto-dimming mirrors and rear Park Distance Control. A six-speed automatic gearbox is also offered for buyers of 120i and 120d models. Comfort Access (keyless entry), Extended Voice Control and Professional navigation systems will appear some time after the model launch.

This car will do well.

A lot of people will think "why have a wel speced VX astra / Focus / Golf / etc. when I could have a BMW?"

The prices aren't too out of step with higher spec Focus sized cars and might temp people to trade down a size from the class above (Mondeo sized) to get a rear driver with the right badge.

Besides what did you expect. BMWs have never been know for being low priced.

Yes, but this does take the piss a bit. If you think of all the other cars you can buy for nigh on £20k it had better be pretty damn good.

I see the options list has a pair of sunglasses and a white stick for people who like the styling.

On the other hand, perhaps they feel that their unique-for-this-class RWD platform is worth charging a premium for. There simply isn't another RWD option available in this segment. Just a thought.

I had an Austin A40 and my mate had an Anglia. RWD isn't everything. He he.

Oh, but it's got RWD. I bet that'll impress the mums outside the schoolgates and for trips to the shops and back.

I think that we're going to be seeing lots of the new 1-series... at 8.30am and then at home time again...

Don't mind the looks too much(considering it's a product of Bangle)but those prices are shocking!

120d OR slightly used Impreza Turbo? The choice is yours...

I agree with Cortinaman's last 3 words. The 1 series makes the VW Golf look gorgeous. But If I had to buy in this class it would have to be an Audi A3.
