It seems the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration in the USA is on the cusp of announcing a new regulation that will mandate the fitment of black box recorders to all vehicles.

And what happens over there has a habit of happening over here.

GM has been putting them in cars forever, and just about every new car has one. The use of them for evidence varies by state. Manufacturers like them because of liability suits, so they can prove there were no defects in the car.

Well come for the very good idea! But can any one explain it little more for the detail understanding as i don't have any idea about it.

More a airline style black box which stores data on the last few minutes, rather than a full on tracker (which is what a lot of people here seem to refer to as black box when talking about cars).

I thought most modern cars had this. It's so you don't blow your engine by redlining for 5 miles and then play dumb when you go in for a warranty repair.
