Is there really a point to saving Maybach?

I'm pretty new to the PH forum but I saw that an article about the Maybach brand that made me think. Let's be honest Maybach cars are UGLY even my dad, who isn't really a car person, calls it a rich mans hearse so that really can't be a good sign. I think that they are fantastic on the INside as it's crammed with technology and the options list that go with it is stupidly long and very expensive. £30,000 for a glass parting between the driver and owner anyone? For anyone who don't know what the cars are, they're basically mobile boardrooms that cost as much as a house. My view is that Daimler should go ahead with Aston Martin and both share their ideas as it would be a good move for Aston Martin. If they don't decide to go ahead with this idea then the super luxurious sub-brand that is Maybach should get killed off. What does everyone else think on this?
They also want to concentrate more on the S-Class and make that the top in luxury. Also, people always want what is exclusive, specially these rich, big ego types. So even if the car looks satisfyingly ugly, if its exclusive and expensive, some idiot will buy it! That's just my view anyway.

People buy cars even if they are hideous and ugly or rebadged. I'm sure the maybach is an S-class underneath, i've seen a few Panamera's and I do think what was going through their heads when they bought it but it could be a good car despite looks.
And yeah the options list is ridiculous but if people have serious cash then they won't be worried

Yeah this is very much a business decision.
Basically if Mercedes believes that they are making a significant profit from the Maybach and/or if its making a significant contribution towards its branding goals (recognition, image, awareness, etc) then to them there is "a point to saving Maybach".
I mean if you look at it this way, its likely that Mercs and possibly a few Maybach sales have increased in the "Hip Hop" market thanks to the mention of the Maybach in songs by famous artists e.g. Rick Ross's "Maybach Music"
Also if you look at the Bugatti Veyron you would think that a huge margin was being made by VW, especially on a car that costs millions. But the costs of making the car, the time taken to research, engineer and develop would make it seem as though making a car such as the Bugatti is not worthwhile.
But its the branding and marketing benefits that such extreme cars (extreme luxury, extreme speed, etc.) have for the parent companies (VW, Mercedes, etc.) that is a massive factor in determining whether there is "a point" to making these cars.
