Nice review "LA" I could not agree more with your views on Clarkson ........except I don't even find him funny.
But I think he may be harmless .

He's like a spoilt kid in a sweet shop. One week he's telling us how amazingly fantastic and ultimate the Ford GT is and begging Ford to let him have one until they let him have his way. Why do they bother? This week, the Ford is forgotten as Fat Kid Clarkson wee, wee wees all the way home about the Porsche Carrera GT - "no other car has ever made me feel like this". Great, so buy one and give Ford their GT back so someone a little less flighty in their tastes can enjoy it.

BTW, I bought one of his books Planet Dagenham for 50p in a Blackpool cheap book shop so bide your time. Oh yes, the 50p was wasted.

i've always found clarkson amusing. i can understand why people don't like him,but i take his style in the same way i take an action movie-no real in-depth detail, but great entertainment.
sure,if i was to analyse his style in detail he would probably annoy me,but i like his one-liners and enthusiasm.he's made for tv and to be honest where is the alternative?
i've got brundle's dvd and even with the most amazing selection of cars it is a bit of a chore to watch it as brundle is just too serious and dull in front of the camera.JC is league's ahead,IMHO.
i'll probably buy his book cause it will make me laugh.
what i'd really like to see is an EVO or AUTOCAR end of year dvd with all the fantastic cars showcased and tested and rated.

That's the problem ! I even tried some of these Euro' car programs. They are more boring than watching paint dry.

But is he incapable of seeing the fallacy in his own arguments? Apparently so. With one breath he's telling us how the Maclaren Merc is incredibly easy and effortless to drive and then he's telling us how the Porsche will bite you as soon as look at you. Sure, ultimately, the Porsche beat the MacMerc's time (barely)but you can imagine they probably almost died trying while the MacMerc would have churned in 1:20's all day.

But with Clarkson, it's like a schoolboy's "to hell with everything else" 0-60 figure to the detriment of all else. He is, however, entertaining, but I do detect a tide of "not again" surfacing. There was even some talk on this forum of who might replace him.

Hey, Willt - a slight detour: you being ex-Glasgow School of Art, what did you study? And did you ever meet a great painter called Barbara Rae? Tell me more.

I believe Barbara Rae was a lecturer in "Drawing & Painting". I studied Product Design & Ceramics. I was in the same design group as Ian Callum (DB7)! Every project he got as a student ended up as a car design, it was all he was interested in.

I trust you have a fulfilling job too and are enjoying life to the full.

Yes! My interest in ceramics brought me to Staffordshire where I found little scope for "product" design in tableware. I work in the less glamorous world of ceramic sanitaryware. I have been in charge of design and development for all 3 local companies (Doulton, Twyford and Armitage Shanks). For the last 7 years I have run my own Design consultancy and have worked for clients in: UK, China, USA, Thailand, Middle East, New Zealand, and Europe. I count myself as lucky thanks.

LA what's your connection with Scotland or Glasgow School of Art ?

The great Charles Rennie MacIntosh building has been an attraction for decades - I was a student in Glasow -and then one day Barbara Rae became the attraction. She's now Dr Barbara Rae, CBE, RA, RSA. RSW. RGI D,Litt ... phew, and there's no living with her. Her work is now in most of the world's great collections.

You're obviously a talented guy yourself, tasteful in your choice of cars too, I see. I'm impressed to read you've built up a clientel and a distinguished track-record. My congratulations. Perhaps one day we can share a Talasker, or better still, enjoy one each!

LA
I spent 5 years at the GSA including my postgraduate year. 3 of those years were spent in the Mackintosh building, I even had a key to the front door. I felt as if I owned the place. It was hard to leave and I have many happy memories. By the way Ian Callum was a very nice guy we got on well but as I specialised in ceramics we only worked together for one year.

So, Will, are you enlightening the rest of the world in contemporary sanitaryware design? (That's a serious question - after a time reading TVR threads everything else begins to look ambiguous.) Best WC design, flush too, I've ever encountered is in my LA apartment; a fine work of art and a bold design. I suspect you also help to design those pretty shelf bowls for bathrooms and fine practical ceramics like that? I'd post a wine glass Smiley, but being POH there are only beer ones!

I've replied by email.

Which is why he now lives just outside Chipping Norton!

Clarksonian wit is great - more power to him as he's a refreshingly irreverant, non-PC voice in a huggy-fluffy health-and-safety obsessed world.

And a big softie at heart......

Unforgettable Clarkson quote as he donuts a Griff: -

"it's singing soprano at the front...pause...and baritone at the rear...OH YES!!!"
