200mph Leean
All set for record attempt on July 28th
PHer Leean Pindar is all set for her attempt to smash the world land speed record for driving blindfold down an airfield runway at 200 mph.
She has already reached the speed in a training session but without the special blacked out visor she will be wearing on the day.
“I know it seems a stupid thing to do but I thought I’d give it a go. I’m not a reckless person by nature but this appealed to me.”
Leean from Watford learned of the bizarre challenge when reading PistonHeads a few months back.
Credit broker Loans.co.uk, offered to sponsor her after seeing an appeal for help in a local paper.
The organisation Record Breakers is arranging the attempt and Leean will also raise cash for the British Blind Sport charity.
Leean, a swimwear model, will drive a 1997 F1 Tyrrell car formally used by Dutch ace Jos Verstappen for the challenge. The 650 bhp racer has been specially adapted to keep it in a straight line over a one kilometre course.
A safety car will travel alongside relaying instructions to Leean over a radio link and will be able to flick up the jet black visor should she get into difficulties.
“I’m confident about driving the car and as long as I keep it straight I know I can break the record.”
Challenge organiser Gary Knight said: “Every safety precaution will be taken. Leean has been specially trained to drive the car.”
Leenn will make the attempt on Wednesday July 28th at Elvington Airfield, near York. The current record of 144.7 mph was achieved in a Jaguar 4.2.
personally I doubt she'll get anywhere 100mph
1km isn't long enough even for an F1 car to get 200mph from a standing start.
add to that that a car doesn't actually go straight unless you can steer it - track surfuce - wind will all steer it off course - perhaps a driver who actually can feel/sense the direction the car is moving might stand a chance.
But sorry, charity or not - yr money safe !
Hope she doesn't get hurt - sounds like a disaster waiting to happen

I think you'll find she's had plenty of training, and practice, and I'd be surprised if it doesn't go smoothly. She may not get to 200 mph, but I reckon there's a very good chance the record will be broken...
Jos' car . . . Oops, he is known for his crashes and sidesteps . . . good luck Leean, there are plenty of jokes coming on but I'll hold them inside.
