Swedish pensioner survives car crash thanks to radio commentary

A Swedish motorist who crashed into a rock face claims that he was kept alive by the news of Sweden's five nil win over Bulgaria in Euro 2004.

The pensioner crashed his car and was trapped for five days before a search party organised by his family found him.

When discovered he claimed that the commentary on the radio got him so excited that he forgot the pain he was in and brought him back from the brink of death.

So if England perform badly in Euro 2004 can we expect Professor David Begg to use their poor performance to explain why "safety" cameras aren't saving as many lives as he claims they are?

I'm not going to comment on this particular story but there have been studies carried out that showed that the incidence of death increases when your football team is doing poorly and decreases when doing well. I think the studies were carried out during France '98 if thats any help to anyone wanting to delve a little deeper.

It's a well recognised phenomenon that there is a dip in the death rate just before, and a peak just after 'significant events' such as Christmas, or the Millennium. People do really 'hang on' a bit longer to see these things through. A study also showed that the same applied to changes in Inheritance Tax regulations, although whether the old folk were determinedly holding out to benefit their loved ones, or the relatives are fiddling the time of death to their own ends is open to debate!

Does that apply to other teams too? Like F1 teams, for instance. Does that mean that Ferrari drivers are currently less likely to die than at any time since the 1970s? Does it mean BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes drivers are all about to cop it, while Renault and Honda drivers feel great one day and lousy the next?

Surely if had not been concentrating on listening to the football he may not crashed in the first place??
