A STAGECOACH bus driver yesterday denied claims by the Countess of Lindsay that he sped past her horse-drawn carriage causing the terrified animals to bolt.

Robert Imrie, 61, was giving evidence at the Court of Session in Edinburgh on the second day of a court case in which Lady Lindsay, 40, wife of the 16th Earl of Lindsay, is suing Stagecoach for £21,153.

The exerpienced horsewoman claims that Mr Imrie sped recklessly passed her open carriage at up to 50mph as she was enjoying a regular training run on public roads near her home in Upper Largo, Fife.

Mr Imrie, who was driving the X60 coach, told the court that he had slowed to less than 25mph before overtaking.

Mr Imrie, a bus driver for 11 years, said: “The person in the carriage waved to indicate that he slow down. I braked. I indicated. I pulled out to the right and crossed onto the other side of the road and passed the horse and carriage,” he said.

He looked back in his mirror and saw one of the horse’s heads going up, but he did not think there was a problem and drove on.

In evidence heard later by the court, a motorist travelling behind his coach said that he saw nothing untoward in Mr Imrie’s overtaking manoeuvre.

Stupid cow...

Horses belong in fields not on roads. MOST people who ride horses need to learn some manners and common sense.

Shouldn't the Countess of Lindsay be prosecuted for not being in control of her vehicle? I'm being serious here - I mean if you had been driving any other vehicle & caused over 20 grand of damage just because someone overtook you (at 25MPH or 50 - it doesn't matter) you would be in court before you could blink.
Surely if she can't keep control of her vehicle she should be banned - nothing against horses, but it's up to their owner/rider/drivers to keep them under control...

don't know bout that Matt - if you are finding them all over the road and shaking their fists, its probably YOU PISSING THEM OFF!

Horses go on roads between fields and bridleways, we just need to be observant when we drive then all can get along together - also you often get a wave from a horse rider if you do go past slowly - and some young lady horseriders are well worth driving slowly past!

So it wasn't a horse? It was a cow in a pantomime costume - serves them right!

And "Stagecoach" and "speeding" - no there's something not right there........

Where has she worked out the £21k figure from?

The bill from her pet pyscologist for emotional damage caused to the horse perhaps?

I think the horses were on the roads first so they sort of have a right to be there, though I agree with your sentiments otherwise and have no love of the brutes, having once been kicked off my bike and into the path of a car by one such stupid animal.

Just to clarify: I actually like horses. I like most animals apart from insects...eeurch. If I see a horse I'll slow to 5mph and pass as wide as possible trying to make sure the rider knows I am there. Whats fks me off is the riders who look at you like scum, or don't say thankyou, or ride side by side, or don't wear reflective clothing.

OK so horses were on the roads first but that was when there was no practical alternative and no conflict from cars. Horses don't have to be used as transport and I'm sure they very rarely are. However, people do ride them for pleasure and sometimes have to ride on the road to get to bridle ways etc. BUT I see time and time again some arrogant riders who do go for rides on roads when there are alternatives.

Let me ask you this is it fair for the horse to be exposed to danger just so its owner can see the countryside without having to get up off their arse? (BTW that last comment was meant to be tongue in cheek but the question still stands)

I think the romans built the first proper roads so they could march their armies all over the place, even put trees next to the roads to keep the soldiers out of the sun on hot days.

But if you think im going to march in the road becaose the were there first you have got to be kidding.

What, a shiver in the 'oh No, can't stop myself starting another wind up on another site which shall remain nameless shiver' type of way?

*shakes head*

Not again !!!

I am not getting involved in this one, other than to say that horses are stupid creatures, the riders doubly so for trusting a stupid creature, but some of the girlies have cute bums.

If they're riding considerately, i.e. single file and wearing a bib, I slow right down. If it's a hunt I'll sit there bouncing off the rev-limiting, possibly doing the odd donut, until every one of the ****wits has fallen off and been savaged by the dogs.

Interesting how much better police horses deal with traffic, people screaming, lobbing bottles, etc than many of the nags in private hands. Perhaps a bit more training is in order...

Horse shoes damage a road more than a tyre does and they get away without paying tax!
Come to think of it not many horses do 20,000 motorway miles a year so that could be the reason!

Personally I can forgive a girly for a lot if she is wearing nice tight jodpers and big boots... mmmmm boots...

Not sure about this case though - how come it has got as far as court if there is a witness to back up the coach drivers story?

Somebody have the right Title or handshake or something!?!

Good point about Police horses though ATG.

Cheers, Phil
