Some good news for a change

http://www.dft.gov.uk/news/press-releases/dft-pres...

Some common sense being shown at last.

With ANPR in use in all forces in the UK, why do we need SORN anyway?

They could save a big chunk of wedge by scrapping it, and spending the cash saved on more ANPR to catch the scrotes who drive without tax/insurance/licence - with a simple penalty - immediate seizure and destruction - occupants may alight from the vehicle, but that's it. So if you've got our shopping/work tools etc in the car, tough luck, in the fragmenting machine it goes!

Rather than seizure and destruction, DVLA should then have the authority to re-register the cars to themselves as they see fit and sell in auction or via agents to auction. This then provides an added financial incentive for the government, reducing the tax burden, and make people think twice about not insuring or taxing.

How about road tax on Direct Debit. So you can tax a car for the months you want. Forget about tax discs as the ANPR is the primary way to catch car tax dodgers. So instead of £260/year you have say 12 payments of £22 a month all done online with no paper required.

I like that, but probably not workable.

I'm most pleased about this:

  • Abolishing the regulations on the treatment of lost property on buses.
Bus companies currently have to wait 48 hours before they can throw away perishable items left on the bus.

Much more efficient and less smellY!

Many many years ago, the Police used to auction unclaimed cars from the impound yard.
Incentive is the coppers keep the money, so are rather encouraged to get uninsured vehicles off the road.

If this lot also want to cut-out a tax, then the road fund licence should be first as it never gets spent on the roads!
