Rollers for High Rollers

Posh hotel in Dubai buys two Phantoms to add to its fleet

Burj Al Arab, the world’s only 7 star luxury hotel, which opened in Dubai in 1999, has bought two new Rolls-Royce Phantoms. Since its opening, the hotel has used only Rolls-Royces to drive its guests around and it currently has a fleet of 10.

Ordered in Arctic White with a Navy Blue interior, the hotel’s first new Phantom features Oak Burr wood veneer cabinetry and trim along with sumptuous leather upholstery. The cabin is further complemented with reversible footrests, lambs wool rugs and a cashmere/wool mix headlining. The second Phantom for the Burj Al Arab will be delivered before the end of the year.

Designed to resemble a billowing sail, the Burj Al Arab hotel soars to a height of 321 metres, dominating the Dubai coastline. It opened in 1999, offers 202 suites, has six restaurants and bars and even features 24-carat gold leaf fixtures and fittings.

We are off there next year to celebrate our 10th anniversary.

Do you think they'll let me borrow one go to the mini-mart for an in room picnic?

Bet that't the only hotel in the world where guests have been known to 'borrow' the taps and leave the bath robe!

If you want to visit the 'underwater' seafood restaurant, you need a jacket. If you can't be ar5ed to pack one (as I couldn't, since I didn't think I'd need it in the desert on the way to Oman, or at the Dubai Rugby 7's tournament!), the one of the concierges on your landing will happily arrange a loan.

Also, FYI, when I was there at least the place was teeming with Russkies - don't know if it's always like that.

Now they've got something even better to ferry you from the airport I'll have to try and get back there.

There is a good few quids worth of Hermes his & hers 'smellies' to pinch (rude not to if you're a shameless gypsy like me!) and as GCerbera says, the suites have to be seen to be beleived; 2 story jobs with totally OTT decor & fittings.

IMHO, although the Burj is by far the flashiest and most expensive place I've stayed, it's not to my taste and not my favourite. The best places I've experienced, in terms of good, honest, down-to-earth, friendly service (and great grub) are in South Africa.

Great! So I mention this thread to the wife and now SA is on the list. Sometime wish I'd kept my big mouth shut.

Any recommendations?

Sorry for being late picking this up but..

If you want luxury, and a good introduction to big game safaris, you could try the Shamwari reserve, just NE of Port Elizabeth.

If you want a base on the garden route, I could recommend the Lake Pleasant hotel, just off the main road at Groenvlie (near Knysna).

I'm certainly no great authority on SA, but they are places I would not hesitate to visit again. Glad it helped.
