I like lists, me. VW group things:

Bugatti
Bentley
Lamborghini
Porsche
Audi
Volkswagen
Seat
Skoda

Ducati

MAN (75% share, overall control)
Scania (90% share, overall control)

Suzuki (20% share, but relationship quite sour. VW got into it to get into the India market)

The irony is that Porsche tried to buy VW when things were going well for them.

Side question.

Do they own any brand names that are not currently used in production cars?

(e.g. Singer / Riley / etc)

Yes, quite a few.
Wanderer, DKW and Horch were the other parts of auto union (along with Audi), so I think they are still available.

NSU too, I think.

As I understood it at the time, it was the Porsche Holding Comapany "the family" that attempted to take over VW (and succeeded I believe), Porsche "The Carmaker" was wholly owned by them.

After taking a majority shareholding in VW they where left with large debts, which they financed by "selling" Porsche (the carmaker) to VW (which they owned).

Think it's fair to say they owning the deeds to a brand doesn't mean to say they get involved.

I'd hope if they did, they'd change the god-awful shape Porsche have used for the last 300 years fir every model they've done.

I can't think of many VW products I like, but their efforts in moving Audi upmarket whilst using the same components as Skoda/Seat, and their gradual raising of Skoda brand value (and pricing) means that Porsche should have a stable financial future. Which is good.

It is a logical fit, but I hope they manage with a light touch , like Fiat do with Ferrari and Maserati, rather than swallow the Porsche brand into one megabrand stable.

There's something to be said for the next 911 to be based on the TT platform and a Porsche version of the Audi A1/Polo.

I'd agree, I'm no Porsche fan but a superfast lightweight designed Polo would be quality.

What would worry me is the risk of premium brands like Audi; Porsche, and Lambo being slowly and irreparably lost in each other.

I don't want to look at a Porsche inspired and designed Lambo. eugh. ugly thing.

What I fear is how long before Porsche dilute their model range with a re-badged VAG supermini a la Aston Martin Cygnet?

Yep, the money-moving exercises have been hilarious, but the end result is that the Porsche holding company owns a majority stake in VW who in turn own a majority stake in Porsche cars. Ridiculous.

I believe there are plans for Porsche to start building Boxsters on a VW production line to cope with demand.

Remember Fiat group own/inclue: Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Masarati and it's since they have owned them the quality of these cars has improved!
