Sorry,.. I know its not car related but I cant believe the americans used a b52 and a helicopter gunship to blow excreta out of an afghan wedding party. The excuses they then came out with would be laughable if it werent so f*****g sad.

No excuse but I have to say that celebrating a wedding by discharging large numbers of firearms in a country full of highly nervous, trigger-happy, US Marine Corps jarheads does not top my list of bright ideas.

no, but they're there are we're not and that counts for a lot. There's not much merit in criticising them unless we're prepared to do the job better ourselves.

About time EU countries dipped into their pockets and paid to have proper logistics, and proper kit. If anyone wants a good working definition of "unambitious", take a look at the plans for a combined european "rapid" reaction force. What a joke.

But wots the point of being there in the first place?? Bin Laden - do me a favour, that guy was well out of the country long before anyone got close to it. Protecting oil interests - hmmm maybe closer to the mark, establishing a presence would be closer....

Agree about the European twaddle - the tanks would be Italian (suitbale for use by those with long legs, short arms and only with reverse gear!!) Funny thing is I once worked on a tank engine project for the italians - they did truly want a tank that went faster backwards!!

True, I heard (bloke down the pub) that the Yanks want to put a pipeline - gas/oil - from Uzbekistan to the coast, and who should be in the middle....yep, a wedding party, no sorry, Afganistan.

I'm afraid that you have to face the unpalatable truth that if you book a DJ for the reception who insists on playing the Birdie Song then you only have your self to blame when others feel driven to take extreme action as a result.

I'll get me coat then..........

This isn't news - read Taliban by Ahmed Rashid to learn about the 'new big deal' on oil out there..

You'll find out not only all about the oil plans, but also about how the CIA in association with the (Pakistani ISI) facilitated drugs trafficking through Afghanistan and Pakistan prior to the uprising of the Taliban.

agree with your general point but they are making the situation worse, not better. If they just came out and said, 'oops, we f****d up' people might have understood. They look like a bunch of lying idiots with more kit than brains.

Yes, but I was interested in the topic.. I actually ordered this book a couple of days before 9/11. Amazon promised delivery in 72hrs. Then I got an email from Amazon saying I'd have to wait about 6 weeks for it as they were having to release a new edition

Can't think why

Can't get too exited over a few dead ragheads at a wedding sorry.

Two reasons why

1. I was at a wedding in the UK about 6 years ago, yes admittedly it was being held in the Officers mess at the Headquarters of the Royal Engineers Bomb Disposal School but just as Wedding Breakfast was getting under way a proper certified, coded and confirmed PIRA bomb scare got phoned in. This was not some Squaddie having a dig at his boss but the real thing from Belfast that resulted in the whole machine getting swung into gear. Nothing went off and it all got dealt with safely but the bottom line is we've got sick fluckers on our doorstep who would happily do actions similar to those in Afganistan intentionally but we let them take seats in Parliament.

2. Afganistan and the Afgan people do not think the same way as westerners they do not attach the same values to life nor respect the same things as we do. After all it's not that many miles away from where this happened that the practise of the local "lord" turning up at the wedding and insisting on being number 1 to roger the virign bride before handing her back to new hubby is still rife.

Shit happens, it was a Fcuk up for sure but it is a war environment and I for one couldn't give a shit about a few more dead rag heads.

Mel's right re the cultural differences.

Those poor buggers probably get to valhalla or whatever they call it, dying at the hands of military action, whatever the circumstances.

It's only the guilt riddled self-hating western liberals (the condition which is really fcuking the west up btw) who'll really get upset about it and start beating the US military up over the whole thing.

The US goverment, military and secret services do shit all the time which, if you found out contemporaneously instead of in a book 10 years on, would have a hell of a lot more people up in arms. Same is true of all western government and come to that government in general, whatever the constitutional arrangements.

The cultural differences are there all right, I lived in Saudi for a while and it is frightening how much it differs. Dropping bombs on a wedding doesn't seem to help much though, especially when the yanks are beginning to realise the rest of the world does not think the sun shines out their arse. B52's are hardly reknowned for their pin point accuracy are they and not in much danger from small arms fire at 15,000 feet

Sure there are cultural differences. Afghanistan has a different culture. Regarding Belfast (sinn fein?) and warlords, an a$$hole is an a$$hole in any culture.

This however, is just racism:-

... and I for one couldn't give a shit about a few more dead rag heads.

I'm sorry but that's a truly revolting attitude to have and I hope you end up eating your words. Don't give any of that "I'm not PC bollocks and don't care" either it's not clever or hard.

It simply proves you are an ignorant a$$hole with little regard for people simply because they aren't your race or colour.

Or is it just a practical realisation that they couldn't give a shit if I was dead ?????
