Pricing confirmed for Golf GTI

VW reckons orders are mounting up

Volkswagen has confirmed prices for the new Golf GTI, which made its world debut recently at the Paris Motor Show. Starting from £19,995 on the road for the three-door model, the latest generation of the original hot hatchback will offer 'an outstanding blend of pace, quality and overall value for money', says VW, when it goes on sale in the UK in January.

Standard equipment will be comprehensive, with key items including

  • 2Zone electronic climate control
  • Ten-speaker CD player
  • Multifunction computer
  • ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme)
  • Driver, front passenger, front seat side and curtain airbag systems
  • Automatic driving lights.

Striking 17-inch alloy wheels are fitted as standard, with optional 18-inch versions expected to be a popular choice at £445 RRP.

VW describes the GTI is 'a true performance hatchback', offered with a 197 bhp 2-litre turbocharged FSI engine. Featuring homogenous direct-injection, this four-cylinder powerplant produces a flat torque curve, with maximum pulling power of 207 ft/lb available from 1,800 to 5,100 rpm. Combined with either a six-speed manual transmission or Volkswagen’s revolutionary DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox), the new GTI promises strong, accessible performance in all driving situations.

Available with both five and tree doors, the car offers more individual styling compared with other Golf models. This raft of GTI signifiers includes

A plunging black honeycomb grille with red frame

  • Lowered sports suspension
  • Double stainless steel exhaust pipes
  • New front and rear spoilers
  • Red brake callipers.

At the rear, only the ‘VW’ roundel and the evocative three letters ‘GTI’ are displayed, with the ‘Golf’ badge absent from this special model. Inside, chequered upholstery harks back to the Mk I GTI, while aluminium trim adds a smart contemporary ambience.

Prospective buyers of the new Golf GTI have been able to pre-order their own vehicle since VW launched its dedicated Web site (see below) in August. The site enables customers to specify their GTI through a simple step-by-step configurator, choosing, for example, colours, options and upholstery; a unique reference number (URN) is then issued, which the customer takes to their local retailer to complete the order.

Here's the site, and here's more on PH.

Still looks as boring as ever, IMHO. VW just seem unable to take risks these days. Perhaps that's their safe, reliable brand strength.

Interesting, you can't choose the DSG gearbox thingummy unless you choose the 5-door version. Wonder why.

given that you can buy something like an rx-8 for that kind of money, still with 4 seats, looks better and probably quicker, why pay over the odds for what is basically a family hatch.

Well, choice is no bad thing. And there are a lot of people in the market for a safe choice like the GTi, which will enjoy some good long term residuals with not far off family hatch running costs, unlike the RX8. Oh, and it's also about £2k cheaper.

the lower powered Rx8 is £19,995! plus you've got rear wheel drive, imho it loks a lot better and according to a lot of reports its a lot more fun to drive (i haven't driven either myself so cannot say for sure).

The thing is, its a hot hatch and there is a much wider selection for less than £20K!

IMHO its v. overpriced! ok those wanting to reminisce of their younger days will probably buy one.

If you want a family hatch then buy a golf or whatever, but @ £20k i don't feel its a compromise between the two.

The Polo should take the GTI-flag from the Golfer . . .

It's smaller and lighter and more gti-ish lined . . . and would go for cheaper. So VW: try put the lump in that one . . .

The Polo GTI is now a nice little hot car?

When their marketing folks feel they need to TELL you its value for money, you can probably bet that its not actually good value..

Twenty grand is BEFORE you start putting any options on it too.. sat nav and nice wheels etc and you're pushing 24k

I'm not sure how VW expect to sell a single one of these barge sized tubs.

The Seat Leon Cupra R is a lot cheaper, and I expect will kick the Golf's arse into the weeds.

For my part, I'm looking forward to showing them what a proper performance VW goes like - with a 9 year old Corrado (note to self - make sure to clean the back of the car so they can read the VW badge on mine as I disappear from in front of them, lol)

John
p.s. I had to laugh when I spotted "red brake calipers" amongst the sports equipment. I mean REALLY!! Everyone knows that if you wanna make a crap car go faster you have to fit underside Neons, ha-ha-ha

Current vRS still available for £13,990. Now THAT is a bargain.

Well I like VW's but I have to say £20k for a standard Golf Gti is taking the piss!!

Sorry but if I needed a practical fast hatch and I wanted a golf I'd rather pick up an immaculate R32 and it probably still wouldn't cost me as much as this.

Mind you I do agree that the Skoda and the Seat are much better 'value for money' choices; I just like the sound of a 3.2l V6...mmmmmmmmm

I just priced up my "bargain" VW Golf GTI and it came to over £25k, wihout sat nav or any stereo upgrades !

What a "cracking" price for a family hatchback that weighs 50% more than the original MK1 Golf!

I really cant believe that a hatchback now needs nigh on 200bhp to extract reasonable performance.

Progress eh ?

They'll sell them because of the badge and the in my view false perception of superior German build quality.

lets face it, BMW have managed to squeeze £20k plus out of punters for a Cooper S mini with bugger all seats and boot; i suspect VW will do just fine with this

(but Skoda/SEAT/RX8/Alfa Coupe would be further up my list)
